Hi Marcus,

One quick check you can do the next time the engine doesn't want to start is to watch the tachometer while cranking the engine. If the needle doesn't move, suspect the crankshaft position sensor (CKPS). The tach should show 200-300 rpm while cranking.

I would also suggest that you have the car scanned for any stored fault codes that may hasten the diagnosis.

If no codes are stored, how long has it been since your last tune up (plugs, fuel filter, air filter, etc.)? Sometimes hard starting can be caused by a combination of multiple components not functioning at 100%, especially in extreme conditions like high ambient temperatures.

Yet another odd set of symptoms cured by a crank position sensor. I am starting to think that this should be a mandatory first step in diagnosing every engine related problem!
