Warning about MAF and its plug, and poor/no idle
This follows on from other posts but I think warrants a separate thread...
I have had some idle issues and I may have an intermittent coil fault which is had to isolate..
I noticed 2 weeks ago that the 3-wire plug that connects to the MAF was loose and pulled off easily. I twisted each of the 3 parallel prongs on the MAF about 5’ - 10’ to make the plug a tighter fit.
I ordered a new MAF from Worldcarparts and fitted that today - the car idled fine cold, but kept stalling when hot. I took out the actual metering part, which in the Worldcarparts one is held in bu 4 tamperproof screws, and cleaned the actual sensor with MAF cleaner, just in case that was the issue. Still awful.
Then I pulled off the plug, and it idled perfectly, so I pushed it back on firmly and it was fine. I assume there is wear in my plug causing poor connection, so I have also twisted the 3 pins in my new MAF and now it is idling fine.
This may also be an issue for others with poor idle...all our electrics are 20+ yrs old
Also, if buying a new MAF , buy by part number not the model it says it fits. Many sites are confusing, listing the XJR-specific MAF as fitting all the X300 cars.
XJR - LNA1620AA (specific)
all the N/A 3.2 and 4.0 6-cylinder cars are LHE1620AA
I will post a pic of the twisted pins soon.
