Water pump on the way out...
One of these would help....only $7 or so in most parts stores in the USA.

Did you start the engine when you had the belt off? If the noise disappeared then you'd know for a fact that it was one of the belt driven devices.
It's not absolutely carved in granite that a noisy bearing will be a loose bearing. Sure would be nice if it was, though :-)
Might try unplugging the alternator. If the noise diminishes or disappears with no electrical load, there ya go!
Cheers

I doubt it's the alternator - as above, that's smoother than the WP, and one of the first things I looked at was whether turning on all the lights, radio, heater etc made any difference!
Latest theory: The top hose was leaking from the joint on the thermostat housing, coinciding with the start of the funny noises. I've replaced the hose, but what if the leak was running down the water pump, and made it into the bearing? It could quite conceivably have dried it out, but not (yet) caused it to wear out - the opposite of what usually happens! Sounds tenuous, but why would the bearing be sealed particularly well from the outside?
Just for anyone searching for the answer to the same problem - the above is indeed the noise a water pump can make. No play, no leaks, but even when spun by hand once removed, you could hear that it wasn't right!
I'm changing my pump for the same reason. Noise similar to yours and no leaks whatsoever. I thought it was my supercharger, once the belts were off it was obvious that the pump was toast.
