Weird stereo
 
When I get in the car and start off, I have to crank the volume of the stereo up a fair bit.
As I carry on my merry way the volume slowly gets louder and I have to keep turning it down.
Amp on the way out?

The original Jaguar Jaguar / Alpine AJ9500A stereo head has a input pin to increase the volume with increasing speed notated with Spd in the drawing

lets look at where that comes from

For a 1995 model see page 173 section 18 .1

A couple of pages later you will see the premium option amd separate final speaker amplifier using the same head with the same Spd input

This refers you back to page 117 for the Spd input

Which refers you to page 87

The ABS / Traction control as well as the speedometer gets it's signal from the left rear speed sensor

Are those things failing to indicate a complete sensor failure ?

The sensor and it's one signal can degrade partially to the point that one subsystem can't see it but not enough to where others can

To " clean up " that one signal you can ..........

Wire Black / Red and Black / Pink of the color Orange pair should read about 1300 ohms as a inductor sensor as a basic test other then a functional test being a sine wave

The most common problem with the sensor is the face of the sensor , other then the connector , gets dirty .

The grease or grim attracts metallic partials that interferr with a clear signal

In removing the sensor to clean can be tricky as it's made from plastic and gets stuck in the wheel hub

So the trick is to not try too hard and break it

Some soaking with some spray penetrate can help

The sensor is at the very top of the hub and is a 10 mm bolt and can be explored without jacking the car

Ask me how I found out

Someone ( Motorcarman ) suggested to leave it installed and reach around the inside of the hub to clean the face

By checking for the 1300 ohms at the ABS module connector you may get information on whether the sensor has completely failed internally

This gets you around possibly damaging the sensor or you can look at the stereo head connector if the Blue wire has be disturbed

Would that affect the cruise control as well?
When I bought the car the traction light was on all the time; after a while it cleared itself.

Be thankful it is still adjustable! I've had volume stuck on but too low to hear, as well as too loud to endure! Head units can be a bit wonky....sometimes on but non-responsive to the front buttons. Or Off and non-responsive.

There is one wire from the ABS module io the cruise control module that inhibits the CC during throttle rollback or retard which is the traction control response to a spinning rear wheel

This is the Slate / Red wire

Looking for the wire telling the CC what the actual speed is...........

This is the Blue / Purple wire

This Blue / Purple wire comes from .......

I had a 96 xj6 that one day the factory radio would not turn off,knob or key.got in the trunk and pulled the fuse,still played [I think it was the right fuse].so I disconnected the radio and replaced it with aftermarket,but hated the little buttons.i prefer the factory radios.
