What "fires" the chain tensioner?
Curious question. I've read where the "bump" the starter method will 'fire" the newley installed upper chain tensioner or one can "manually" fire it...does one simply push on the end or tap on it? What prevents it from "fireing" on the bench....seems like I should know this but, I don't! I'd like to manually "fire/engage" it once installed and wonder if I need to be carefull with it prior to install. Thanks
If you prise the tensioner plate away from the chain pushing the piston of the tensioner back intom the body, it will release the ratchet mechanism. I would not do this with the tensioner on the bench as the piston will come out of the body and you could have pieces flying everywhere, including into your eyes! It would also be difficult to install the tensioner into the cylinder head, if it has already been released.
As already stated above.
The tentioner comes "pre-loaded", so unless your sense of humour/adventurous spirit, is really out there (mine is), leave it be.
Once installed you have 2 choices.
1) Hit the starter, the "flopping" of the slack side of the chain will "rattle" the piston into "fired" mode, and oil pressure takes over from there. First timers need ear muffs, coz the rattle will scare the c^%p out of you for about 2 seconds.
2) If you have the camcover off, simply reach in with a LARGE flat bladed screwdriver, and work the chain blade a few times, and you will feel the thing fire. The spring inside is STRONG, and it will be felt. The engine will now give a slight "ching" sound as it all settles into harmony, less scary than step (1).

Boy, I was hoping I hadn't stumbled on to one of those forums full of smartalec's.....guess not, hopefully few and far between. No kidding "oil pressure" NOT...thats what works it after it's initial mechanical expansion...it comes collapsed and must be "prodded" into expansion by the starter/chain or mechanically manipulated. (it also expands on spring pressure not just oil pressure) If your going to provide a "smarta$$" answer next time do your due diligence and read the entire question and provide "constructive" input. I didn't want to "accidentally" expand it through careless handling/install....I think I get the whole "oil pressure" thing in it's normal daily operation. Thanks to those who provided valid, usefull responses.

Just one example of the useful information I personally found utilizing the search function and wanted to share this example with you.
