What's inside the rear resonator/mufflers?

Curious, has anyone dissected the rear resonator/mufflers on the X300 to see what's inside?

Mine are finally starting to rust after 20+ years, which I think is actually pretty impressive lifespan for aluminized steel, but it looks like I'll need to replace them in the coming year or two. OEM are still available, and aren't terribly expensive so I may just go that route. But given the reasonable but not cheap price, and that the new ones still aren't stainless, I may consider some inexpensive stainless "resonators" depending on how much "muffling" these really do.

The upstream "intermediate silencer", part #1 in the link below, is quite a bit more expensive so I wonder if that is really what is doing the true "muffling"?

The "intermediate silencers" are still OK on my car for now, but I guess these rear mufflers/resonators really get beaten by road spray and debris.
