stuart, are you looking to buy one or just get one to read the codes? if you just want to borrow one to see what the codes are in your car, stop by almost any auto parts store and you can ask to borrow theirs. They normally loan it out to you for free. You just have to use the reader in the parking lot of the store.
Now, if you are looking to buy one outright, there's a very large range that you can be looking at. You can get a basic reader for about $75 at most autoparts stores. But, all these readers read is the P codes related to the engine. They don't tell you the codes for the tranny, body, ABS, suspension, etc. So, you get the ability to read about half of the possible codes (granted, the ones you can read are the most likely ones to come up). The more money you spend, the more features you can get. The higher end ones (you are now getting into the $1,000+ units) allow you to see all the codes possible and they also allow you to see real time parameters as seen by the computer. This can be advantageous if you have a problem and it isn't really obvious. You can normally save some money getting a setup that uses a laptop/PDA to access the car's computer. This way you can get away for about $200, but you have to have either a laptop or a PDA device.
