Default X300 alarm problem? Lights flashing!

My indicators are constantly flashing (all of them) and headlights are constantly on.

The only way to turn them off is by disconnecting the battery.

Has anyone experienced this ?

I experienced something similar a few years ago. I found a link that suggested it may be related to a bad coil. I took the coil cover off but couldn't locate a bad coil. Put the cover back on and the flashing went away (and has never reappeared). Not sure why.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I'll give that a go in the morning. It would be lovely if it was a simple coil change!

I also notice that the window wiper starts working (under its own volition). The starter motor is continually engaged!!!! I have to disconnect from the multi plug. Not sure if it's related.

Had a look at the coils. No sign of wear and tear.

im starting to think it might be water getting in to the ECU.

I believe the ECU is located to the right of the pedals. A job for the morning.

I removed and opened up the ECU. No sign of water damage, so I put it back in.

I've got access to a code reader so will hope to get some fault codes.

Current faults:
indicators continuously on
lights on
window wiper on
starter motor continuously on

very strange. Could it be a faulty ignition switch. ????

How accurate are the fault codes in respect of the window wiper and starter? If the cause is not the coils, two other potential targets for attention would be the Body Processor Module and Security & Locking Module or devices which they control but may have been compromised due to poor/improper contact, grounding issues, loose connectors, etc.

I agree. The code reader will struggle with the wipers & starter motor.

Thank you for the pointer on the body control module and security module.

If if I disconnect these to have a good look at them on the bench ....... Will they need to be reprogrammed when I put them back ? Or would it be a plug and play ?

As per Qvhk, the BPM is would definitely be top of my list. I've not heard of this scenario before but all of those components are controlled by the BPM and I can't think of any other component that is common to those things.

Yes the BPM can be removed and replaced without any programming or configuration work.

Thank you for that information. I'll remove the BCM and have a look this weekend. I believe it's located under the glove box! Do you know if this is correct ?

Took the glove box out and revealed the Body Control Module (BCM). Opened it up and all looked ok. No obvious water damage.

Did the same with the ECU in the footwell of the drivers side. All appeared ok.

The only way to know would be to replace these parts!!!

im now thinking it might be the ignition switch!

Has anyone removed one of these before? If so how easy is it?

if I replace the ignition switch I think I may need to programme the key? Is this correct ?

Default Fixed it

Success!!!!

After locating and replacing the BCM all of the electrical faults have disappeared. Thank you all for your help. Well happy it was a cheap fix....... second hand BCM.

Nearly all !!!!

Last hurdle. After starting the car the starter motor continues to spin. I have to disconnect the multi plug that is associated with the starter once started. And obviously plug it back in when I wish to start the car up!!

Any ideas why the starter would continue to run after the car has started?

The two potential culprits which spring to mind are the ignition switch and the starter solenoid.
Does the ignition switch feel "normal" when you turn it, ie smooth, distinct stages, spring pushing against you in the start position, key returns to "run" position when you release it? I havent encountered a problem with the switch on an X300, but on other vehicles there was always an acompanying anomaly in how the key felt.
The starter solenoid physically moves the starter cog forward into the flywheel, and at the point of engagement, applies power to the starter motor. If it sticks in that position, the starter will continue to run even when the power from the ignition switch is removed. A sharp tap with a hammer might be a good place to start the diagnosis, as this may release it, and allow normality to be restored. It might even be a permanent fix, although as we know, sods law usually decrees otherwise.
