x300 Throttle Body Issues
 

Hey all,

So, I think I may have throttle body issues on my car (96 naturally aspirated straight six), but I just wanted to confirm. Occasionally I would be starting up the car (particularly in cold damp weather) and the accelerator peda; would be stiff, and it wouldn't rev the engine. I would then have to tap the throttle, usually once or twice, for it to resume normal operation. But then today, as I was driving, the pedal got stiff again and it stopped revving, which proved to be a bit scary, given I was driving on the road at the time. I pulled off to a gas station, popped the hood, and was able move the throttle body by hand. That allowed me to limp my kitty home.

When pressing the accelerator pedal and moving the cable by hand, there is a noticeable stiffness, but for whatever reason, if tap the pedal a few times, the engine will rev. Does it sound like I need a throttle body cleaning or is something more serious at play?

There are 3 different parts in play here. The Pedal, the Cable, the Throttle Body. You need to separate them and operate them independently to find out which one is actually causing the stiffness. Then go from there.

If you have to ask whether you’re throttle body needs cleaning....your throttle body needs cleaning.

Although there’s a very good chance that’s your problem, The previous post made too much sense.

in any case, clean the throttle body.

Do you have traction control? The TC module can be an issue too.

But yes, I'd start with cleaning the TB, which fortunately on the XJ6 is an easy job.

Jaguar addressed this issue several decades ago.

Sometimes the "boot" that holds the cable into the traction control module can break, and then the cable binds. If the throttle turns smoothly by hand, follow the cables back and make sure there are no kinks etc. The traction control module is on the right side of the engine bay.

Well everyone, you were right. It was the throttle body. Really dirty inside. Cleaned her all up and now? Excellent driving. She purrs like a kitten and roars like a lion - the perfect combination for a Jaguar.
