XJR - fuel consumption and buying tips please
Hi,
I am going to look at an XJR6 tomorrow with a view to buying it. Before I do, could anybody give me a rough indication of the fuel consumption I could expect, and any pitfalls I should be aware of unique to the supercharged 6 cylinder engine?
I recently sold my 4.0 litre XJ8 which returned 17-23 mpg in everyday use and up to 30 mpg on a run. Would the XJR6 be much heavier on juice under normal driving conditions?
Cheers,
John.

Hi XJ-Driver,
I have my XJR from new and back then the consumption was 17l / 100 km, today it is between 22-24l / 100km - urban. On the highway it is around 12/100.
Check the supercharger itself - if the pulley has a freewheeling movement it will need a rebuild.
Check for rust under the wings and the thresholds.
The clock inside the car is usually making problems it is not working.
If the car has a sunroof it often enters water and it is reaching the engine computer which is causing failure.
Check if the climatic is working properly - the air condition radiator can need a change.
Listen to the work of the fans and if it is heating. Some of the sensors are not working properly because of a rust during the years, or the fans are gone.
The other things are the usual.

I get 12-13 mpg in city driving and 20-22 on the open road with cruise control. Those are USA gallons, mind you.
That would be about 14-16 and 22-26 mpg using your bigger UK gallons
Cheers

I believe it is capable of using LPG but I have never checked.

Okay, in the city seems okay... That is where the old V12 will suckmback. The 12l/100km was on a 400km stretch of autobahn @ 120 kmh.

Well, thanks for the replies and advice chaps. I went to look at that XJR earlier... What a disappointment! Couldn't believe I was looking at the same car which had been described to me in such glowing terms by the selling dealer yesterday! At least now I know what a tired / scruffy example looks like.
