XJR Fuel Injectors
 
This is another episode of my road to recall Rose from death. Following the fuel tank horror (broken harness buckle; water in tank), it is now found that the fuel rail was full of muddy water. The rail and the injectors were taken out for thorough cleaning. The latter were also ultrasonic-washed but unfortunately they did not pass the final test, so they have all to be replaced. The injectors removed from the car were clearly original, with Part Number D3165KA engraved on them, and a red band (see pictures) to differentiate from the non-supercharged versions.

My search for new parts had very weird findings. There are more numbers than one would imagine to match. Jaguar Parts Number is DBC11041 or LNA1520BA (LNA1520AA is for non-XJR). The actual injector will bear the number D3165KA on one side and 0456 on the other side. The original injector were said to be made by Lucas. New ones are sold either in the range of GBP45 - 60, or over GBP120 each. The cheaper ones are mostly gone, and it is difficult to find a full set of six new. There are many used ones on eBay, but after seeing my own after the ultrasonic wash, all injectors look new but still fail the test, I would hesitate looking for used ones. There are also many part numbers that look alike (e.g. D3156KA) with claims that they would work on all X300 models.

Like the coil issue, should I trust those new ones asking for GBP45, or those asking much higher some US sites selling them for US$145 - 220 each, which is quite frightening. There are three past discussions here about injectors:

Yes, I remember seeing this listing too. Wonder why it is the cheapest if original - the description says "Direct Replacement Part", so implying that this is aftermarket product - picture does not match the original. Have anyone used them and are there any issues? Don't want to experience the notorious coil saga.

When you say you had your used injectors "ultrasonically cleaned" do you mean you sent them to be fully rebuilt?

I'd also be interested to know about those new injectors listed above, if they actually work and are a quality kit. That's pretty cheap.

No, not rebuilt per se, simply getting them machine-washed first, like as demonstrated in the following video clip.
The mechanic said that after the wash the injectors still end up in varying level of performance so are not worth further ado. Perhaps the last three years of idling and water had added more damage than its mileage of 170,000km.

Not necessarly aftermarket. For O2 sensors for example you can them from Jaguar and they come in an Jaguar box but inside is a sensor made by NTK. Or you could buy the same thing from NTK for about 1/10 the price and it comes in a different box.

This may be the case that they are made by whoever made them for Jaguar and it comes in a different box. Worth an inquiry anyway!

I doubt the injectors are "Lucas" even if branded that way. The coils carry a Lucas label, even though they were made by Diamond in Japan.

Yes, I would think so, as injector is a common car part these days. Been to RockAuto's site which is a must check for replacement parts, like the O2 sensor as you said. There are two injector offerings that matches D3165K, but the cheaper version is left with only one injector in stock, and the other one is many times the price of the cheaper one. I end up buying from British Parts.

The injector set from British Parts arrived today. Wrapped with a Parts No. Label LNA1520BA claiming "Made in GB", the identifier on the injectors reads D3165BA.

The original injector has a red band with the No. D3165KA. According to Jaguar's TSB, D3165KA has been replaced by D3165AA (green band). I shall see how the new injectors perform once the engine resumes normal operation. I also got new coils from Japan.

The injectors are a Bosch design, and are either manufactured by Lucas under license or manufactured by Bosch and branded by Lucas. The Lucas part number is D3165KA, but the injectors are typically also marked on the opposite side with the Bosch part number, which is usually in the format of 0 followed by three groups of three digits each.

I did some research on XJ40/X300 fuel injectors a while back and posted some info here:

I also managed to clean and replace the filters and O-rings on our original injectors and restore their performance. The filter and O-ring kit was less than $20 from an eBay seller and the last time I checked they are still available. The professional ultrasonic cleaning method no doubt has certain advantages, but one disadvantage is that the cleaning fluid is not being forced through the injectors as it is in the home DIY method. Many thanks for the very useful background info about Jaguar fuel injectors and with special reference to the X300 and XJR. My head was spinning when faced with so many different versions of injectors on various forums (Bimmers' as well) and on eBay when conducting my own research last week - there are just too many that look alike or have very similar production reference numbers.

does anybody know the spray pattern on these?

meaning spray cone and bend angle ?

I suppose these are dual spray cone and either 15 degree or 20 degree cone

but are the spray cones straight on the injector central axis or bend away from the central axis?

Sorry, I have no idea about the spray pattern. Just an update after installing the D3165BA new injectors with Parts No. LNA1520BA from British Parts; the injectors are a good fit, and engine and throttle sync instantaneously well.

Hi AnttiM,

I don't know the answer to your question, but the photo below might give you a clue. You can see the two dark spots in the foam on the cleaning liquid in the bottle - those indicate where the two injector streams are aimed. My impression is that the angle between the two streams is probably around 15 degrees, certainly no more than 20:

looks to be straight pattern spray positioning by eyeballing the photo.
