I have just bought a 1999 XJ8. It was not running when I bought it - a new fuel pump now has the engine running.

The next problem is that I can't select Drive or any other forward gears. The car moves back fine when I select R, and acts properly in park and neutral. I can move the selector to D, but the D doesn't light up. I can't move the lever across the bottom of the J to select the other forward gears.

I have checked the linkage and reset the gear select lever according to instructions I found on this site, but it didn't help.

I am not getting any gearbox error messages - though I am getting restricted performance messages.
