Default 2002 XJ8 No audible alarm sounds

I'm a new member and trying to figure out how to post a new thread. I have a 2002 XJ8 with 108,000 miles and recently all the audible sounds that the car makes like turn signals, lights left on, etc stopped working. I checked all the fuses that related and they were all OK.

Any help were to start looking would be much appreciated.

Andy,

I've moved this from New Member Area - Intro a MUST section to X308 section.

Guys here will be able to advise on troubleshooting the turn signal speaker.

the speaker is located inside the lower steering wheel cowl, it's a couple of pozi screws to remove the lower cowl and then test the speaker - a few guys have fixed it by using a cheap portable radio's speaker unit in its place. Hope that helps..

Hi Sean thanks for your reply. I removed the lower steering wheel cowl that was attached with 4 torx T27 screws but didn't see any speaker. Could it be located anywhere else or am I missing it?

Thanks Andy

Sorry Andy - I am getting older and confused with each day...

Anyway, mixed the speaker location up with the dimmer switch, the speaker is located behind the grill bit of the cowl, and should be above the ignition switch, to remove the upper cowl you'll need a flashlight to locate the pozi screws, forgot the lower is held with torx, but most of the car is so...anyway hope this gets you closer to a fix.

Hi Sean I found the speaker where you said it was located. I replaced it with one from our local electronics store and the cost was only 75cents, I don't see how they can make them in China and ship them here for that price. It was the same size at 2 1/2" dia but the impedence was only 8 ohms and the original one was 64 ohms. All of the audible tones were considerably louder than before which makes sense because you're getting 8 times the current flow. I soldered a 47 ohm resistor to one speaker terminal which raised the resistance to 55 ohms. The sound level is now the same as it used to be. I hope that I didn't harm anything by adding a resistor to the circuit.

Once again Sean many thanks for your help.

Andy
