Airbag Warning Light - Stays on, but no Code

I have a 2000 XJR and the warning light came on and stayed on a few times, then it decided to go off and stay off for a few days, then came back on and has now stayed on for a few months. I went to an independent shop here in LA and they checked the codes and said nothing came up for the airbag light. (I watched as we went through the codes so I know they did this.) When I left the car with them, they told me they took off what they called the "tensioner" and cleaned the connections on the steering wheel to the airbag. According to the shop, after they did this, the warning light was off and staying off, but when I went to pick up the car, I fired it up and...BAM, there's the warning light, shining as brightly as ever! I asked them and they said they didn't know what to do about it. I fear the expense of taking it to a Jag dealer, so any help is appreciated! Many thanks in advance.

Find a shop with an Autologic to read the codes. If the light stays on, a code should be set. A standard code read only pulls the engine codes. It will not read body, trans, or SRS codes.

Airbag codes are very specific, and most likely the dealer will be the only one to properly read the codes with their system. I've had some issues with mine, and they were able to get codes that related to the seat harness...not the clock spring (tensioner as you called it). Those are the two most common items that i've seen cause the airbag light. I'd take a chance at the dealer on this one.

Hi ken!

Thank you both!

Thank you both for your replies! Yes, I remember that they did say it was the clock spring they tightened. I suppose I have to take a chance with a dealer then.
