Clock gone bad? or worse?

Suddenly the clock in my 2001 XJ8 has started to run very fast - went from keeping perfect time to gaining 5 mins/hr

Do I just have a clock that is dying or might this be indicative of a larger electrical problem?

THANKS

Sounds like a T-up clock (rare to my knowledge)....their function is quite basic and is a 24/7 circuit.

From this site (be sure to bookmark it, it will come in handy) ....JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

...comes this pdf... http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxj1999.pdf...

...and from that pdf, came this....

See what a hard reset might do for it. I’ve seen stranger things get fixed from a hard reset.

Over the years of owning my old Jag, I have encountered other owners who have made the process easier. These resources you have provided are awesome and will be a great help in keeping the old car running a while longer! THANKS

What is a hard reset? Disconnect battery?

Addicted2boost 05-15-2019 10:32 AM

Disconnect negative battery cable first, then disconnect positive battery cable, touch both battery cables together for about 15 seconds to discharge residual battery voltage in all modules. Reconnect positive cable then reconnect negative cable and tighten down snug.

Ebay has inexpensive used clocks most of the time.
Good time to replace burnt out dash bulbs as well

I am too terrified of cracking one if the wood veneer panels to go into the dash myself. Dealer charged me $150 to replace dash bulbs - which sounded good compared to a thousands of dollars veneer set if I screwed up!

I replaced my clock on my prior XK8 myself after practicing on a wreck. Simple. I replaced the wood panel on my XJ8 with a Van Den Plas one after removing it from a wreck. Simple. Point being learning from a wrecked Jag is a great way to learn with no downside. I've learned how to remove a headlight assembly for my XJ from a wreck, dash cluster wood as well. I'm now looking for a right seat backrest cover to eventually put on my left seat back to restore the worn bolster leather.

Sounds like a fault in the clock internals... There's not much adjustment that can be done with them, and if the voltage was off enough to affect the clock speed then you'd be seeing symptoms elsewhere, the internal vreg on those usually allows for a pretty wide range before acting strange.

For avoiding damaging interior, "plastic interior pry tool kits" are a huge help. I've been using my kit from harbor freight for years and had great luck with it.

PM sent, I have a spare sitting around I'll give ya for cheap
