Head gasket and timing chain tensioner

Plan on making a how to with tools and parts needed.

I've started taking things apart and have some concerns.
1. Oil dipstick shows overfull but doesn't look milky
2. Lots of oil on spark plugs (mostly on top)
3. Puddle of oil in throttle body
4. Crank case breather hose looks milky inside.
For those who are unaware this is a follow up to my "no heat" thread.
I replaced the thermastat and the water pump still looks brand new so i cant figure out what caused it to overheat. I also noticed that after draining the coolant again it looked gritty.

1. overfull by up to a quart is not a concern. some higher end models actually use that setting.

2. that would be your spark plug boss seals which will be replaced during the upcoming work

3. normal maintenance item along with cleaning the throttle body

4. could be short drives when engine does not get up to operating temperature

You say the waterpump looks brand new, so probably not the impeller. Instead it may be settled silicates. There was a change in specification for anti-freeze between the earlier and later years. Improper coolant mixing can cause this, as well as hard water.

Jaguar Land Rover Crankshaft Pulley Removal Installer 2 Set | eBay
What does everyone think of this set?
Any Other suggestions?
Im also looking for the tool to disconnect the small coolant lines. One of the hoses looks like it is built into the connector but it isnt removable.

Why the crankshaft pulley removal? Are you planning on changing the primary tensioners as well as the secondary?

johnsonsteven1986 03-03-2013 07:44 PM

I'm replacing the head gaskets so i plan on replacing everything that can fail so i don't have to worry about it later.

I have been responding to too many threads. I forgot you had to replace the head gasket. Sorry about that.

There is a puller for the XJ8 that is circular and looks like the best fit- I used a universal puller, and it was *ok* but I am surprised I didn't destroy the threads on the pulley (I have to admit I ruined a perfectly good pulley from another motor trying to remove it with a universal puller....

car is now for sale. im getting out of the military in two months and no longer have the time or money to fix. My backup vehicle blew a tranny seal and i know longer have transportation.

The "puller" threads, at least on my MY 99 XJR, were the only SAE threads I have encountered on a Jaguar. I don't know if they came that way or if they were re-tapped previously. Anyone Know?
