Question How to get at the airbag, and potential theft targets?

Hey all,

I have an '03 XJ8, and i've got a bit of a problem.

The previous owner had to bring in the car to a shop after it had been keyed. About a week after he had left, he noticed his sunroof motor was missing. After some investigation, it turns out an employee of the shop had gotten in there and stolen it.

I have since replaced it, but it hadn't occured to me until now that other things may have been taken as well, and high on my mind of parts that wouldn't be noticed is the airbag.

So I suppose the thing I want to know is

  1. Does anyone know how to access the airbag without risk of deploying it, so I can check to make sure it still exists?
  2. Can anyone think of any other parts that wouldn't be noticed if missing, so that I can get a checklist?
I dunno if it helps, but I have been having an unresolved issue with the ASC/TRAC and ABS not working, despite having done the ABS computer fix with a soldering iron, as well as the trick cleaning each wheel sensor thoroughly. It would be great (or perhaps terrible) if I discover the root of the issue is due to a stolen part.

Stolen sunroof motor? Very odd. I wouldn't think they would steal the airbags.. The one behind the horn is not readily available and the passenger bag is pretty hard to get to. Sounds like they knew someone who needed one and swiped it. Still a strange story.

I believe the AB is all one component - including the wheel trim - so the whole front of your steering wheel would be missing. You would also be getting a code - The system checks itself.

What codes are you getting?
