Default How to tighten a loose rear view mirror?

Well I've searched the forums and found out how to remove and install the mirror, but I can't find anything to tell me how to simply tighten it.

I've removed the cover, I've pushed it up and it clicked into position with very slight movement, but it is still loose. Can anyone shed some light on how to tighten it up?

In the process I've noticed that the mirror is showing the signs of it failing, so it might be time to replace anyway, but I can't stand it in the meantime. This and rattles are the things that drive me crazy!

You can bend the metal clip 'arms' slightly to get a tighter fit. Pull it off, bend clips, reinstall.

I did exactly this to fix my loose mirror. Be sure to remove it as motorcarman stated. In the past, I tried to bend while intalled, and cracked the potmetal, thus ruining an expensive mirror.

You can bend them but do it a little at a time, you stand a chance in breaking it and you will not find a replacement. This might help. http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepairMirrorRepair.htm

I should have looked at your site first... if it has occurred, you generally have the solution!

Thanks Gus.

No problem! Just use caution when bending/adjusting… Good luck!

Thank you for this fix. I had asked my mechanic about this and he wasn't able to do anything to fix it and it has bothered me for the last couple of years. The one thing I added to the fix was I heated the clip with a heat gun in the hopes of avoiding the breaking of the clip. I don't know if it made a difference but the clip didn't break and the mirror is solidly in place.

Hello Chris, yes I do.

First fill in your car details, and introduce yourself to the 'new members section'.

You need to push it off it's mounting by pushing the glass at 90 degrees with something wedged in between the housing and the glass a paint scraper with a rag does the job.

How about if the reason the mirror is loose is because the circular clip that compresses the plastic grip around the ball joint has jumped off?

For the life of me I can't quite figure out how to spread it, so that it will simply slide over the plastic grip.

Any ideas? Otherwise it's a fully functioning mirror, i'd hate to resort to a hose clamp :-(

Default Loose rear view mirror.

The rear view mirror on my 1998 XJ 8 was loose and jiggly too. I read the posts and considered that chances of breaking the metal tabs or the windshield. I was able to push the whole assembly upwards towards the headliner until it cam off, then I put a few very small strips of black electrician's tape under the metal tabs and at the end lengthwise after the tab. Then I slid the assembly back down and it is now reasonably firm... and I still have a windshield. Thanks to everyone on the forum for keep my auto running.

Sigh, a hose clamp worked perfectly to fix my loose rear view mirror...
