Welcome to the forum. I don't know if you live in the US, but if so you could send the ECU to ASI in Tennessee and they will test it for $55. If necessary they will either repair or exchange, probably for under $400, although shipping and insurance will add to that.
The engine knock does sound ominous, and rebuild or replace is expensive, but with all you have invested to this point it might be worth while. A used engine with warranty is probably $2-3K plus labor. Your mechanic sounds rather expensive, telling you everything should be replaced with new. You might want to try for a second opinion. But that also depends on where you are located.

Wow! That is quite a list. All that points first to VVT/cam issues. I would start with removing the valve covers and checking the intake/exhaust cam alignment. Both, since both banks are identified. You say cam chains have been replaced but were the tensioners and when? Many plastic tensioners have been replaced with another set of plastic tensioners which will also fail.

Thank you guys sorry I have not checked this in a few days and the Tensioners were done by Jaguar of Great Neck NY in January when all the other work was done to it... I bought a used ECM that comes tomorrow I'm hoping I'm going to luck out and it will work. But the one issue I have is that knocking I really don't want to put another 3 K into this car that car is only worth 8 K in mint condition!!!!! and I have spend well over that all ready!!
Thank you again
Thank you again
If you install a used ECM you may need to perform an 'immobilization setup'.
All the modules on the CAN bus will need to 'shake-hands'.
Sometimes the car will start but if it does not, then you might need a PDU, WDS, IDS to get it going again.

hey - Thanks if you can help

I have an appointment with jaguar of south Hampton to 'reflash" the ECM but I was told that it might not work and that I might have to go spend 3 k on a new one but its worth the shot to save the money on the car.

I had my XK8 ecu repaired by them for under $400. It's a plug and play operation, no dealer computer time required.
All you have to do is disconnect the battery and remove the ecu. They will test it for $55, and if it can be repaired, the test cost is applied to the total.
