Jag wont start - FIXED

I have a 1998 Jag XJ8 L... The battery need a charge and i did that... now it wont start... the motor turns over fine and of course it has fuel... i have no clue as to what might be going on... Ive never had this or really, any problems before... any help greatly appreciated.

Please read this first and see if it applies Nikasil No Start Cylinder Washing This procedure applies to cylinder washing that is typical of Nikasil 1996 – 2001 engine blocks.

still looking for the inertia switch.. is it on the drivers side or passanger side.. ive read about it being on both.. also noticed that even aftwer being charged the battery light stays on when cranking.. is it possible that even though the engine cranks there isnt enough battery power to start?.. once again any help is appreciated.

In the drivers seat it is to the left

Well... i guess im retarted.. i can not find it ... is there a panel im supposed to remove?.. there isnt a removable panel on the drivers side kick panel so im guessing its under the dash?.. im lost... any more help you can give?

Open the driver door and look at the side of dash fascia for a triangular pop off panel. It's in there.

And yes, the battery is capable of spinning the engine at a voltage below the threshold of the electronics.

Keep trying, we'll wait right here.

k.. opened the drivers door.. there is an oval panel i poped off.. no resert button in there.. just 2 green headed bolts and a round brass thing... same thing on the passenger side. now im really lost.... also with the battery still connect to the charger reading 4 amps.. i tried to start the car for about 15 or 20 seconds.. to no avail... but checking the battery charger after it now shows 12..wow any ideas?

OK! I have been told that the switch can also be located behind the kick panel on the drivers side. Look for the hood release and remove that panel and it is behind it, so I am told.

Did you see fuses? Just checking that you opened the right panel.

It's not a big red button. It's the square thingee to the right in Gus's picture with a rubber membrane over the top. Press on the top center. You will hear/feel a click if it needed reset. Nothing if it did not.

Sounds like you also need to get the battery load tested at you friendly, neighborhood auto parts store. Batteries are indeed one of the usual suspects in no start situations.

OK, you are not retarded. I stopped and looked up the '98 XJ and the inertia switch is internal to the Body Processor Module and there is not a fuse panel/inertia switch in the dash fascia.

Now, I know where the BPM is on my car but not yours.

well I spoke to te service manager at Jag of Tulsa... he said if you crank on it and it starts making a kebloop kabloop kabloop noise while cranking.. its not the Inertia switch and its probably flood really bad... he said crank on it for about a min and if you can smell fuel from the tail pipes its flooded... so now.. since i try to start it and the batt keeps dieing.. im guessing once i get it started im taking it to advance... and have the batt load tested n such.. since ive confirmed they have the proper replacement,

Wendellr9734 12-22-2011 03:52 PM

FYI... the BPM on my car is behind the glove box!!!

Gus 12-22-2011 04:03 PM

On your car the inertia switch is located on the right “A” post / Lower “A” post finisher. The information I gave you earlier was for an XK8. SORRY! This information is from the wiring diagram for a 98 XJ.

Wendellr9734 12-22-2011 04:20 PM

im not clear on what the A post finisher is.. but... i think its integral to the BPM...not sure tho.. not wanting to start taking my glove box apart..LOL

Gus 12-22-2011 05:14 PM

What did you do?

Wendellr9734 12-22-2011 06:15 PM

I did what the jag service manager told me... put a charger on it... n.. a friend had one with a 50A start assist... i did that.. cranked it .. with my foot flored to shut off the fuel.. n when it started with the karoomphf.. karoomphf.. etc.. i took my foot off.. continued to crank.. and when it started .. i feathered the gas until i thought it would run on its own.. and let it run for about 15mins.. then took it out for about a 30mile drive

Gus 12-22-2011 06:35 PM

Cylinder washing! Wish I had thought of that.
