Default Rear view mirror won't dim.

Can I fix it or do I have to replace? If replace where can I find a replacement?

I had mine repaired by Sybesma some 10-11 years ago. Still working properly!

Here is an alternative to Sybesma, cheaper I think.
Member #HIGHHORSE here had some very good experiences with them, my mirror is ready to be shipped (as soon as this virus craze lowers down).

I need to send my 97 VDP mirror off for repair, but have read the stories on here about breaking the windshield, so going slow! It appears the wire ‘cover’ at the top needs to come off to begin. One drawing indicated it pulls off straight toward the back of the car, but something has to hold it on! Does anyone have a photo of the cap off the stem, or has removed this style that can advise?
thanks

Appears upper cap should be removed first? Mirror then slides ‘down’ off windshield post?

This is the XJ8 forum but the mirrors are similar.
I use pocket screwdrivers to pull the mirror DOWN and off the mount base if the is the type you have.
There is a triangle type mount for the X300 as well. (To VIN (746813))

The rectangle mount is the same as the X308 style. (From VIN (746814))

Do some searches for:
XJ mirror replacement.
Magna Donnelly
Sybesma

There are several threads on; mirror factory defect, replacing it, breaking windshield, loose mirror, etc.
In 2007 they were replacing the defective mirror @ N/C. Some people had liquid leak from mirror & damaged their car finish where the liquid dripped. Others just had spots on the mirror. It was filled with a liquid & the replacement mirror was filled with a gel instead.

I replaced my mirror which had 'spots' @ N/C in 2007.

5 years later same exact issue!
Now I had to go through Sybesma & pay $95 + shipping. And be w/o the mirror for 1.5 WEEKS. (At the time this was my only car.)

The original replacement was likely new, old stock that still had the factory defect liquid inside.

So far the 2nd replacement is holding up. Sybesma confirmed the 2nd replacement has gel inside.

When you find these threads, there are photos & how to descriptions of how to remove the mirror with little chance of damage to windshield. Also info on loose mirror.
Don't just go for it w/o reading about tips to do it safely & letting some mechanic rip it off may get you a broken mirror mount & cracked windshield.

Plenty of information here in MF re this issue.

Thanks very much- a photo tells so much! I had it off the car and packed in 10 minutes. Much appreciated

If you searched & read the other threads you would know that pulling straight back towards the rear of the car is exactly how some cracked their windshields!
You must remove & reinstall by moving the mirror & mounting assembly parallel to the windshield.

I install them in the same fashion but pull UP with the screwdrivers as leverage.

I contacted Sybesma’s last week. They still do repair them. It’s $175 now and that includes shipping and handling. 3-5 day repair time once they receive it.
