Default Just Purchased-'01 XJ8 with Odd Transmission Issue

Everyone,

My father-in-law just purchased a '01 XJ8 with around 96K miles on the clock, he got a heck of a good deal on it! It's a one owner car and had sat for a while with a "transmission problem". He stuck a new battery in it and fired right up, stuck it in reverse and started to line up with a low boy trailer.

He said that he had it in 2nd or 3rd, had the majority of the car on the trailer and then gave it some gas then it stalled. He put it back into park, shut off the ignition, cranked it back up and everything was ok. He's able to back it out of the garage and move it around, he's cautious since it has been sitting for a bit; the CEL isn't on and not sure of any error message present, sound like anything to be concerned about? I planned on a trans fluid change, could there be any solenoid issues?

Thanks!

Andrew

I'd get a proper scanner and pull the codes from all the modules. The CEL is usually on for any components which are emission related.

If the fluid is low you will have TCM codes for incorrect ratio 1,2,3,4 etc. and most likely P1722.

If the 'A'drum failed you will probably only have P1722.

Thanks for the input. I don't think the CEL is on but need to verify, will a standard/generic code reader pull TCM codes? I purchased one from Harbor Freight for my wife's Land Rover, works like a charm but haven't tried it on my S-Type.
