Mice - Wires need I say more?
 

I had not taken my 2000 XK8 out for a few weeks. So on a trip to the doctors I smelled leaves burning when we parked. Just to be safe I opened the hood, (bonnet) and smoke was billowing. While my wife ran to get the extinguisher I pulled flaming mouse nest out from behind the throttle body. Fortunately fire damage was almost non-existent. However the mice had a hefty lunch on some wires. :icon_wheel:Most of them I am able to reconnect with solder and heat shrink. The pictures attached pose my question. First picture, Lite blue, dark blue, black and yellow wire colors. Second picture is the plug in point on the firewall for the connector in the third picture. There are two wires that I cannot see what they are disconnected from. All that yellow stuff is from the extinguisher not a dusty/dirty engine.
Any help greatly appreciated.

From the pic I take it that it is on the left side

Look under what looks like the brake fluid and coolant fluid reservoirs

Quote " There are two wires that I cannot see what they are disconnected from. " can you give some more information on these 2 wires . Are they the ones in the first pic ? The only solid yellow wire on the engine only print goes to the upstream O2 sensor but the wire grouping does not have the other colors .

Good point of having a fire extinguisher in the trunk , have one myself .

Your picture #2 shows the female socket just under the cowel next to a radiator hose that it should plug into.

Yes it is left center location. The four wires are the ones in the first picture. Looks like I am going to remove the throttle body in order to peel back the wire loom and get a little more working room. Right now the wires are chewed off so close that I best guessed the color on what I could see of the stubs. Also need more working room to solder and repair. I should be able to follow the wiring schematics from there.
Just a side note - I see you are in KC. This car was bought at a Mecum auction in KC. My wife held her hand up one bid too long or just long enough depending on point of view.

what is all this white/yellowish powder all over the engine bay?

The is the electrical guide for the 2000 XK8 as there was a Jaguar V8 engine series changeover between the years and possibly wiring changes . Yes they did as the solid yellow wire ( if it is so ) goes to the crankshaft position sensor , CKPS along with a purple wire . The schematics are in the second half of the doc. Page 91 is the engine regulation only

When I leave my XJR in the garage for long periods in the Winter I leave the hood up to try and discourage mice from nesting.

2 years ago found a half finished nest made from yellow insulation that the critters took out of the garage walls!

Thanks for the comment. It is covered but it will cost considerably less to repair than the resulting increase in insurance.

Five snap traps now set in the Jag in various places should help discourage a little.

But for the future comprehensive claims rarely if ever change your rates. It is the At Fault collision claims that increase rates.

Squirrels in particular love wiring. I had one client they ate the harness out of their Volvo several times!!!

Thanks Ric. I forgot about that part. I guess I will give my insurance company a call. May still be a moot issue with a $1K deductible.
