New Year, new noise ?!
Noise surfaces after intensive turning IE u-turns etc. sounds like a spring contracting &/or reeling ?! I've researched the forum & found it could be either the air bag seat springs or the clock spring. Hopefully it's the air bag springs as I'm replacing the wheel in the coming days. Anyways here it is, anyone have a definite answer as to if it's the clock spring I'd like to go ahead & order it & have it done when I replace the wheel.

try and replicate as you remove parts, then see if it can be fixed or replaced.
The bulkhead seal that the column runs through to the rack could be damaged, have a loo in the footwell. |
US cars do not have a loo in the footwell, we're more civilized than that.
|
Going to go w/ just doing the wheel first if it's still there I will do the clock spring.

Is it the squealing/whining noise you're talking about, or the creaking?
Mine started creaking/clicking several months ago when turning sometimes, the interface between parts of the plastic cover that goes around the steering wheel center is causing it. Maybe cleaning it with some dry lube would solve the problem, or some of that automotive felt trim tape, haven't had a chance to try yet. I can replicate mine by flexing the steering wheel (as if checking for bearing play) or squeezing the plastic bits by hand. |
The video tells the tale, it sounds like reeling or a spring being stretched.
|
Do you feel it at your feet when it makes the click ?
I think I have the same issue, but it only makes the noise on large degree turns. |

Try a light spray of WD40 or equivalent between the steering wheel and post, us the spray straw (do a search on removing the steering wheel, clock spring, or multifunction switch to see pictures of where the clock spring sits vis a vis the steering wheel). Light spray will quiet it down. Had to do it twice in the three years I owned the XJ8L. Worked both times.

Ok new noise the 2020 version lol. It's a knock borderline rattle from the rear, Initially thought it was my 3rd brake light but that's secured. Shocks, stops, donuts, wheel bearings all done within the last 7K miles. My phone doesn't have the greatest mic but it resonates on a short drive w/ 2 turns on flat surface in the vid below.

Check the rubber exhaust supports on the top side of the rear suspension. It’s the ones where the upside down U shaped bracket hold the rubber down. Also check the rear mufflers and chrome tips to see if they are on tight. The rear mufflers you can bang on the underside with your fist to see if you can replicate it.
|
Another place is to check the "A" frame rear suspension support bushings, they just in front of the rear wheels. If the frame was bent a bit somehow (like a misplaced lift) then it can cause a noise.
|
If it is not the donuts for the exhaust, likely upper rear shock mounts (they go bad, just like the fronts -- but a real bitch to change). Might also look to grease the zerk fittings both sides of the differential (easy to do once you have lifted the car or crawled under).
|
Did mounts w/ rear shocks about 2 years ago. Will check the exhaust & go through my trunk. The noise seems to resonate up high in the middle region not low like a suspension component, the game is afoot.

Loose fuel tank?

Our very own Highhorse solved my audio riddle in person, it was a loose wheel liner. A casual yet knowledgeable eye, beats an obsessed ear/hear lol. Reassuring to know in these unsure times that good people still exist lol.
