Today I looked at a '308. It has sat for three years, the keys were lost, there is no passenger window, dents almost everywhere, broken right headlight. I figure this can make a good project car to save this Jag howwver, I'm trying to not spend too much. Seller wants 2,000 USD but I'd say it's worth maybe 500 in this condition.
I don't know the mileage, but all I know is that it sat for three years. I'm certain there'd need to be some seals need replacing, filters, etc.
Would there be hope for this Jaguar or is it just too much and call it a day? I hate to see these cars abused in this condition, but there's a point where it cannot be saved.
I hate to say it but don’t walk, RUN from that car. Lost keys equates to no idea on how it runs, shifts gears, stops, etc, etc. It will be time consuming and expensive to just get keys and programming alone. The reality of it is that you’ll need a new battery, then the keys and programming, then you’ll need to have all fuel drained from the tank along with a new fuel filter. The chances the fuel pump actually runs is very slim due to old ethanol in an already old pump means it most likely seized from 3 years. Having no passenger side window means water intrusion unless it was under cover of some sorts. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t take the car for free. Keep looking.
Yeah, definitely only $500,I'd push for $400...you can't prove it runs, so you can't check any codes or even if it has oil pressure. Much less if tensioners have been changed. Shock tower bushings look to need replacement, the steering wheel wrap generally means what you'd expect. Floor carpeting is worn, so it hasn't had floor mats in quite awhile and the center council looks to need repair. May need wheel bearings, shocks, ...does need seats repaired/recovered.
Missing that trunk trim, plus badges and it being damaged and joe'd like it is (it appears the way into it?) that just shows how much that gave a crap about this girl.
Overall, I think its going to cost you at least $2k to fix it.
Yes, I agree, leave it. My '98 VDP in beautiful condition 73k miles on the clock, good tires cost $2100, yes it needed some money put into it, timing chain tensioners , brakes and shocks, but after spending about $5000, I have a lovely, comfortable, reliable ride. I think, unless you are able to do the work yourself you'd have to put at least twice that into this car. Keep looking friend
There is a reason for junk yards: this is a great candidate. Tell the owner you will dispose of it for him for $50! No keys, huh? Why would you . . . ?
You've got many unknowns with that one in addition to your known problems.
I got a 2002 jx8 with only 71K miles, in great shape, ran great, except for a bad (A drive) transmission (known problem), and sagging hear liner, for 750 dollars. Just to give an idea of how little some people will accept for xj8,s with problems.
Aside: 450 for a used trans, put it in myself , have gone 5000 miles since.
