P0443 OBD-II Code and Check Engine Light
 

I got a check engine light. Hooked up a code reader and found out code was P0443-Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit (from Jag Lovers.org OBD-II code list).


Anyone have an idea on where to look for this?

What year and engine? I tried looking up a 1998 XJ8 4.0 V8 in All Data but didn't find a P0443 in the code list. A little more info on your vehicle and I could help you out better.

P0443 is listed as purge valve.
You can find it on the firewall behind the throttle body, small cylinder with rubber hoses and electrical connections. The hoses sometimes develop cracks.

Car is a 99 XJ8.


I will look at the purge valve and let you know what I find.

I found what I think is the purge valve centered between the wiper motor and the rectangular electrical junction box. One of the hose clamps was loose. I tightened it and light has gone out.

This car has an updated valve, common problem. If the light comes back, replace it.

Light back on with the next tank fill.


Do you know the P/N for the updated valve?

No, I don't have the exact number, but it is a superseded part. The dealer in your area will have the part number.

I had changed mine also, didnt fix it. same code. Then I checked the charcoal canisters. When you put gas in these things, (the car) do NOT top of the gas tank, you know, keep hitting the handle to get it as full as possible, the fuel has a tendency of getting into the vent tube hoses. I pulled my canisters and they were packed with gas smelled dust. Cleaned them and reinstalled and wala, no 443 code for 2 months now!
Before buying that valve if you try that. be sure to check the old one. Use a smoker or blow cigarette in one end and power it on with scanner or just jump power to it to see if it stops and starts with the smoke.

I usually pull the nozzle when it kicks off the first time. I will check the canister.

Where is the charcoal canister located? Is there more than one? The parts breakdown on Jaguar Classic Parts website shows it as rectangular in shape.

The part number for the 1999 XJ8 Carbon Canister was NNB6110AA and the updated revised part number is NNB6110AB.

What did you use to clean out the gas smelling dust from the canisters?

I took them off and soaked them with Brake Cleaner then blew air threw them. They were like 3 pounds lighter after I did that. The dirt that came out was black at first. lol

That black dust you cleaned out was charcoal powder which is supposed to be in there for a reason...to soak up the fuel vapors!!! Without it your charcoal canisters are useless and are not performing their designed job.
