Problem with Key

I have been a Jag owner for just a couple of months and have enjoyed reading the posts and trying to learn as much as possible. Maybe one day I will have enough posts to view the pictures! My 1998 XJ8L just rolled over 80K and seems to be in very good condition. I have noticed one thing that has me puzzled. I got three keys from the original owner, 2 ‘regular’ keys and a green valet key. One of my regular keys will not start the car. When I turn the key all the dash lights come on but nothing happens, no clicking or other sounds. I can take either of the other keys and immediately start the car. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I will forewarn you that I am technically inept but willing to learn. Thanks!

Key

It may need to be programmed. I had to buy a new regular (black) key for my car and had to take it to the dealer to be programmed to the car. The dirty so-and-so's charged me about $100, but the key works fine now.

My car came with only one key. After I locked myself out the car once I had a spare cut so I could open the doors, but this key doesn't have a chip, so won't start the car or disarm the security system. Perhaps yours is the same type of spare as mine? :)

After reading the replies I believe I have a key that has not been programmed. My key will unlock the driver’s door and disarm the alarm just not start the car. I appreciate the responses to my situation.
