Default Problems Installing an Antenna Mast

In trying to get this new antenna mast into the housing of the motor, it is just a hair too large.

In trying it to feed the saw-toothen cable from the bottom, the aluminum tube that houses the retracted mast wont budge so I can feed it in. Ideas?

It looks like that washer at the bottom is preventing it from going in. Try filing it down using either a file or 120 grit sandpaper. It won’t be seen so it won’t matter too much if you catch the bottom of the chrome. May help to use a bit of lubricant when installing such as 3 in 1 oil or WD40.

If I recall there's a stainless sleeve with the brass washer at the bottom of the mast - 3" long or so - slide that off and pitch it. You should then be able to install the replacement mast from the top.

I had the exact same problem when I tried to install my brand new Jagaur original mast. So I just filed it down a tad!

Have a look here, with measurements and everything!

I don’t have an antenna problem because when mine broke, I just disconnected the motor. I stream audio via bluetooth. However, I did read your thread link and I will say you did an EXCELLENT job with the pictorial and explanations.

This thread should be pinned somewhere on this site!

The Duchess discovered that the automatic car wash made short work of
here antenna, when I failed to switch off the radio going into the tunnel.
However, we found a nice replacement for about 10 bucks on Ebay and
everything went well installing it from outside the trunk.

I replaced dozens and dozens of X100 and sedan aerials at the dealer decades ago.
Car washes were the main culprit.
The dealer I worked at installed a $40,000 car wash in the BMW building so all dealer cars could get washed when repairs were done as a courtesy for customers.
The Porters that drove the cars through were warned to TURN OFF THE RADIO before hand.

They were offered ONE FREE antenna replacement and following 'mishaps' came out of their paycheck.

I kept a stock of 'good used' antennas if I could find them and offered them at a huge discount when they went to the carwash with the radio on.

I charged $10 or $20 parts and labor for years.

A tiny bit of time on the grinding wheel did the deed. Thank you!

Very funny. I was absorbed in a radio program, had a few extra minutes and stopped for a wash. Of course, none of my other cars have aerials. So when I rolled into the wash,, trouble stuck about half way through. I looked in the rear view mirror, and saw the mast leaning over.

Hello?

Turns out other after market antennas have a washer at the bottom end that is 0.2 mm too large.

Recommendation: sand paper, a file or a grinding wheel. The latter did the deed for mine. Now, Im happily connected.

Thank you, Jeroen! You were a big help and a reassurance that it wasn't just me but a after-market parts manufacturer that was -0.22 mm off!
