Production numbers

According to Nigel Thorley in his book “Jaguar All The Cars”, my 1998 XJ8 in the long wheel base version is one of only 148 made between 1997-2002. I find that hard to believe. Would anyone know how to verify this?

Yes, I was also surprised. I have a 1998 LWB too.

The photo in your Intro shows a Sovereign LWB specification like mine.

Very few base level LWB's were produced (148) and I understand it was not a specification offerered in the US. The Sovereign specification (11,566) and Vanden Plas specification (21,080) were the ones available.

Thanks for the reply Graham. I thought this was a base model because it doesn’t have heated seats and it doesn’t say “Sovereign” anywhere on the vehicle.

It can get so confusing what with the European-only nomenclature, lack of Daimler US licensing leading to further confusion, non-US models and US naming only models!

My 98 donor car is a XJ8L as shown on the boot badge. It did have 2 tone leather seats. I thought this was something a previous owner did and wasn't original equipment. But unfortunately we had a grass fire and the cat is half baked.
