Question about Dash
 

Anyone else have a problem with the middle front of their dash, (where it meets the windshield)? Mine seems kinda bouncy, like it's not properly supported, bolstered underneath.

I suspect it's been off before by the PO or a shop, and wasn't properly secured when it was put back in. I can push it down about 1/3 inch or so before it meets something solid beneath it. There's just enough play there to make it annoying when driving over rough roads.

I spent a few minutes over the weekend trying to gently pry up the defrost vents to see if I could slip my hand under there, and possibly wedge a something-'er-other between, but given the mix of 17 year old plastic and this Texas heat, I stopped before I heard any snap-crackle-pop. :icon_smile:

So, anyone else encounter this with your X308, and any fixes or ideas on how to shore up the bounciness without having to take the dash apart?


On a side note, I installed a wood VDP wheel and shift knob last weekend, and they're sooo nice. I've found that the smooth wood of the wheel under your touch just seems so perfectly right at home in these fine cars.

That is how my dash is/was as well in my '98 xjr. If i remember correctly I shoved a piece of folded up paper down between the windshield and the dash to stop the annoying squeek it was producing while "bouncing" on a road trip a few years ago. Cured the squeek and no more bounce. Correct fix? Absolutely not, but it worked at the time and still is. On the next note, I recently replaced my wood wheel with a perfect condition x100 replacement and I agree, they are great feeling wheels in your hand.... when they are not splintered wood like my old wheel!

This thread is right on time, first high speed trip out on an interstate bridge that has the bounce roll thing going on. I kept hearing a pop/crack(almost sounded like debris hitting the windshield) coming from the center console.

I've got Safelite glass repair coming this week to handle windshield rock damage that was present when purchased last week. I initially thought the sound was the crack but now this gives me another venue to check, thanks.

I'll look into a wedge/cushion again here in the next couple days. We're finally going to get some rain and cooler temps around here they say.

Now the sweltering heat's finally breaking I finally get to drive it with no AC blaring. The console/dash creak happens only when the AC is on, any clues ?!

Since I began this thread, I encountered A-Drum failure. As has been the experience of many others here, it came out-of-the-blue with no symptoms foreshadowing it. But, with 154,000 miles on the dial, I kinda knew it was going to happen sooner or later simply due to age/wear-and-tear.

Luckily for me here in North Texas, our very own Mr. Motorcarman out in Decatur was within reach. All I can say is WOW! I couldn't have been more impressed by his speed, excellent mechanic-man-ship, and attention to detail with the repair.

So... where was I? Oh yeah, was as I really complaining about a slightly annoying dash rattle 2 weeks ago? :icon_smile:

To take a WAG at your rattle though, I'd say it was vibration caused. Your blower motor is probably shaking something it shouldn't. With a rattle of this nature, I'd push around on the dash, veneers, panels etc. when it's happening to see if I could squelch it, then go from there. I'm sure you've already thought of that though...

Well the proverbial plot thickens, today I heard it as I sat in with the car off, so it's clock related lol.

Luckily this newly acquired gem had the tranny & tensioners done 3,000 miles ago/before I purchased it (knock on wood err grain lol).

Both of mine have that slight movement in the center dash -- with the occasional internal noise going over very bumpy roads . In my case one of them sounds like a hose is hitting something.

I ignore it.

Potent audio upgrade will remedy mine lol.
