Default rapid beeping after no start (not cranking) condition

I am new to the forum and also new to Jaguars. I recently bought a 1999 XJR that has been starting and running fine, but all of a sudden it won't turn over and then it beeps rapidly when I turn the key back to the off position, like some sort of security or safety feature. It did start once after I wiggled the shift lever. Is there an adjustment for the neutral safety switch or something? The ignition switch also locks out of the "start" position after the first attempt. The battery is new and the connections are secure. Thanks, Margo

the beeping your are hearing means the j-gate is not in park

There are 2 lock nuts on the shifter assy that can be adjusted...your shift cable could be a little streched...You have to remove the center console to access these nuts they are where the cable goes into the shifter assy

Thanks! I found that if I moved the shift lever to the left (without the key in) it would beep. If it kept beeping after moving it back to the right it would not start; if it stopped beeping when pushed back to the right, it would start just fine. I have not had a chance to remove the console yet, but maybe I can get by for a time using this method.

It sounds like the park sensor switch is not functioning properly. Possibly broken and out of position, or possibly bad contacts internally. Maybe a loose wire?
