Recommend front rotors please

I am in need of new front brake rotors on my ‘03 XJ8....
Several brands available, what would anyone recommend if I don’t want to break the bank?
Thank you and Happy New Year!

3timeJag,

There are many brands out there, and personally I don't think any of them are bad, and I am amazed how cheap most of them are. I have used Brakemotive products on my Corvette as well as my wife's Honda CRV, and never had any complaints. I personally don't think you are achieving anything by paying premium prices, I think the quality for normal driving is fine with most suppliers out there plain, drilled, drilled and slotted etc. etc. The only thing I would recommend is buying the Akebono ceramic brake pads, they are top quality, have a great progressive feel to them, as well as almost zero brake dust.

Excellent. Thank you SO much, and have a safe and prosperous 2019!

Thank you so much! I see you have installed the TransGo valve upgrade...I bought it but have yet to have it installed. Highly recommend this? What did it cost you to install?
many thanks again!

I would have to say it is a must to install the Transgo upgrade., I paid $440.00 at my local (excellent) transmission shop. That was the valve, filter, and 6 or maybe 7 quarts/liters of trans fluid. (ZF-Lifeguard-5). The cheapest I've seen the Lifeguard is about $16.00 a liter.

If you are handy you can do it yourself, but I always leave transmission stuff to the experts, plus it's a PITA without a lift.

All four rotors.

Yep, I was thinking it is a must-do on my list. My tyranny guy, who is also excellent, says he’ll do it for me for around $300. We JUST serviced the tranny with new fluid and filter, says he can reclaim at least 90% of it. Thankfully, the fluid he originally removed was clear as a bell, according to him, so I should be good to go after the TransGo operation. Tranny was rebuilt about two years ago as well. Tensioners upgraded, new shocks and bushings/shock mounts all around too. I’m wanting to keep this one a long time.
many thanks!

Thank you sir! These aren’t drilled or cross hatched, or whatever,....no need for that type of rotors? Ceramic or metallic pads?

I run my rotors as close to OEM as I can get on these cars.

Type of rotor is up to you, plain is fine, slotted and/or drilled-and-slotted are supposed to dissipate heat etc, and look cooler, but you can't see them with stock wheels, so whatever you want to spend.

As for the pads, personally I would go with the Akebono Ceramics, as stated previously.

LOVE my Jag man, took me four tries to get a good one (long term keeper) 88, 91 and two 98’s...now the ‘03.... but it was so worth the journey! I try to improve it in some way every week, even if it doesn’t need it....Love that red one of yours too!
Keep it cruising!

I believe Zues is referring to the eline rotors from R1Concepts.com. They are based out of Southern California and sell through eBay, Amazon and directly from their website. Preface: I have always spent good money to get the better brake components throughout my long adult life. Two years ago I ran across a pkg. of rotors & pads for all four corners for a BMW 740iL. The deal was so good I didn't want to buy them. After further homework on the company and communicating with a number of guys who tried them for their heavy high performance cars ...I decide to approach the purchase as a test only to see if their was a new "kid on the block" working hard to compete with the big boys.

I made the purchase, did the installs myself and followed their break-in instructions to a tea. (break in hard is their method) I believe it's partly because their rotors are nickel plated. I bought the drilled & slotted rotors and their ceramic pads. They look amazing and perform very well! I am very impressed with their products.

However, in the future I will probably try their rotors again, but will probably go with the Akebono Euro ceramic pads!
