Supercharger Coupler Noise
 

Hello all,

Wondering if anyone has any experience with noise coming from their superchargers? I've got a rattling/clanking noise and I'm guessing its the supercharger coupler. Only happens on startup and as the engine warms up. Motor itself runs smooth as butter. I'm at 135,000 miles so it would make sense that it is worn out at this point. Has anyone had any experience changing the coupler? Looks like I'd have to pull off the cooling system then just take off the nose drive to access the coupler inside. Please help!

It might look it at first glance - a big job to remove the supercharger, but it isn't if you have the patience to remove the single rear SC housing bolt. Then it just slips out from underneath the intercoolers without removing them - instead remove the thermostat housing.

There are many options today, (just google Eaton M112 snout rebuild kit) particularly in the USA to fit a solid coupler kit along with the snout bearings. It's a far nicer way to work on the bench as against in the car, my back will not allow such things these days. It will be long overdue an oil change so this is something else to do.

A suggestion, don't reuse seals just buy new as unmetered air leaks aren't fun to locate on these engines. I offered rebuilds on them here in the UK a few years ago, little interest so I gave up on the idea - there's a stack of info on here about them, why not fit a smaller pulley while it's down.

When I worked at the Jaguar dealer I got all the faulty/noisy M112 superchargers from the trash bin when the parts dept discarded them a few at a time.
Jaguar warranty did not want them returned so I took them home and replaced the broken plastic/metal couplers with the nylon solid ones I bought from eBay sellers.

I used a few on customers cars and I still have a few somewhere in boxes. Easy to rebuild if it just needs coupler or needle bearings.
