Timing chain replacement, Crankshaft sensor location?
 

Hi all, I am just in the process or replacing my timing chains and tensioners, I have come across a few problems in the process.

The first being, how to get to the crank sensor and is it on the top of the engine or at the bottom, I believe it is on the flywheel where the engine meets the transmission, but do I need to jack the car up to get to it, or is it accessible from the engine bay?



The second problem is the Crankshaft Damper, or more importantly the crankshaft itself is badly warn, not sure if there is a fix for this, I have ordered a new damper but it looks like it will be warn beyond repair?
a) Could I fit it back together with bearing fit?
b) Could I fit some shim material between the crankshaft and the damper?

Not a pretty sight!

Is that shoulder meant to be there or is it wear?
I'd say the first step would be to measure it and see how worn it actually is.

Roy you'll have to get under the car to access the crank sensor, it's held in with a single torx bolt and is at 6 O'clock on the back/bottom of the bell housing where it bolts to the engine. It's a lot easier if you have someone turn the engine clockwise while you put pressure on the dummy crank sensor to lock it in the service position, once the engine is at 45 after TDC the dummy just slots in.

The crank - I've seen a few worse(on Supercharged) and I usually fit a brand new Jaguar bolt and cone, the cone is a machined taper fit inside the pulley, see if you can get yours out of the old pulley to inspect the damage, usually the inside face of these is a lot more damaged than the hardened crank. Do not try and attempt to 'fix' the damage on the crank nose, just fit a brand new taper cone and crank bolt and buy both items from Jaguar. The torque value should be 385Nm? - I use a Britool torque wrench about 5ft long to get this, and if you don't, it'll keep throwing the crank pulley adding damage to it....beg borrow or steal the correct torque wrench for the job. It's a truck fitters tool!

Thanks for all the information, what a pain it is to get to the crank sensor location, I ended up using a endoscope attached to my laptop to find the correct position of the flywheel, then managed to rotate it with one hand and fiddle the dummy in with the other.

My new taper collar arrived this morning and it is a very sloppy fit, I have measured the crank end shaft and it is warn away by almost 0.9mm so there is no way the taperlok will pull around to clamp tight on that.

I do have access to a 5ft x 1" drive torque wrench, so that isn't a problem, but there is no way that it will pull up enough to lock on the shaft.

I can't see another option but to put a 0.45mm shim completely around the crankshaft end.
