Default How much play is acceptable ?

Hi Guys !

I just got my car back from the shop where they rebuild my diff with a Quaife LSD unit , but they did a kind of messy job...

Two weeks ago when i first picked up the car there whas a loud rumble
comming from the back of the car above 80kmph , brought the car back
straight away but they never found the source off the problem.

Yesterday i put the car on an lift and saw some things i like your opinions about.

First off , it seems they took off the propellorshaft on the wrong side of the flex-joint , something that is not recommended if not needed. I gave them a JTIS printout with the instruction wich state a warning for this action.
The garage offcource tells me that they never took off the flex-joint..
(see picture)

The next thing , they used liquid gasket in one side of the outputshaft bearing, the other side is sweating oil as you can see in the vid.

The third thing , it seems to me there is to much play in the outputshaft side off the diff , but i'm not sure how much is normal for a fresh rebuild diff.

Don't mind the dirt on the wheels in the video , it looked as they went to a autocross with it when i picked up the car.

Can you experts please tell me if the play is acceptable , and what you thing of the bolts on the propshaft (did they took them off or not) .

Thank you !

It is a problem of the X308 Jaguars with the output shaft bearings, if there is much play on it when you shake the rear wheel at 6'o clock, more then 0,15 mm according to JTIS,you have to change the bearing.
The problem of this bearing is the cost, around 200 Euro or more.

Hi Flay ,

i have no axial play , all bearings were renewed during the rebuild (according to the shop who did the rebuild...).

The play is only rotational , about 0,5cm (+/- 0.20" ) when looking to the outputshaft on the diff side.
Seems to much to me.

I'd agree there's too much play, have you contacted the guys at Quaife? There's a certain amount of lash to dial into a rebuilt diff, but it's in the thou's of an inch. Ask if they used a clock gauge to set it up. It also looks like the jurid coupling and prop have been undone, the prop can be unbolted to remove the diff assembly. The rumble could be a bad bearing or imbalance, further investigation required!

Thanks for the reply Sean , i will contact Quaife for this directly , good tip !

The rumble exists from the whole range from 80kmph and up , could that be imbalance due to taking off the flex disc , or will there be only rumble in a limmited speed range ?
