Visor Clips on my 1999 XJ8
 

Rather than replace the broken visor clips on my 1999 XJ8 with the original type I would prefer to use ones from another car that are not so brittle. The ones I've seen on other cars that never seem to break are made of a pliable rubber.

Does anybody know what kind of car uses better clips that will work on my car?

I could go to some car dealers and ask at the parts counter, sometimes you'll find some very helpful people there.

Also, has anybody figured out a way of getting rid of the bright yellow warning stickers on both visors? I find those really obnoxious and ridiculously out of keeping with the rest of the car's vibe. They don't look like they're about to be peeled off.... paint?.... glue some other fabric on?

I think I will try Dorman part no. 74406.

Something I find funny is how people want to hold on to using the authentic Jaguar part in a case like this even though it is by all accounts bad quality.

The stock visor clip in my Jaguar is no more a Jaguar made part than the Dorman part. At one point, some guys at Jaguar picked the part out of catalog, no different than me looking at the Doorman part on eBay. And since they chose the part they did, for decades people will buy that cheap, brittle plastic part because it's the "right one". It's a silly loyalty when you think of it.

Why return a car to the original condition if that original condition was not good quality?

I will post whether the Dorman part works.

At the very least, buy the Jag clip and store it, then if the Dorman fits use that and the day you sell your Jag put the Jag clip on for the new owner to break on his way home :)

Sorry to be sarcastic but these are only cars and I do sense some stuffiness. I know I probably rub some readers the wrong way because I don't "play the game", but I do appreciate the huge amount of knowledge on this site and thank everyone for that :)

I fixed them. It is simple. twist the visor to pop out the mirror. Don't lose the clips that are the spings that hold the mirror in the open or closed position. push them back in the upper corners and glue the clips back in place. Done.

The part that's broken on mine is the clip mounted on the headliner, it's got a piece broken off (see attached pic).

I usually figure that anything that breaks at this point has made it 10 years (in the case of my car), I'll replace it with OEM and get at least another 10 years out of it

Yes, I'd pay $50 for the actual replacements if I thought they'd last 10 years.

But from looking at the broken part, looking at the quality of other broken plastic interior parts in my car and other owner's experiences with these clips it sounds like new ones might only last 10 minutes :(

That's why I'm looking for another type, because I don't think that the Jaguar ones are good quality. Very few cars I've seen have as bad quality plastics parts as my Jaguar.

I received the Dorman clips and the smaller one (the one I'd hoped would work) does fit.

I'd give it a 9 out of 10. The negatives are that it is slightly the wrong color, slightly towards beige but very, very slight and doesn't at all catch my eye as being bad. The base is slightly smaller than the original and on one side I can see the imprint in the headliner where the original was. Very minor. I need to re-glue my headliner so that might remedy that. I had to bend down a plastic piece on the replacement that would have prevented the clip from possibly rotating 360˚ but the original can rotate that way and doesn't. The negatives are much less, to me, than other flaws the car left the factory with.

On the plus side: the visor clips in nicely and is held at a good angle. I used the original mounting screw although I should remove it and add a small stainless steel washer. In my opinion, someone not familiar with the appearance of the original part would not notice that it was odd in any way. I think the part is better quality than the Jaguar part. Works fine.

It cost $8.78 for the pack of 2 mismatched clips. $5.49 of that was shipping. If I'd known it would fit I'd have ordered two and saved the postage on the 2nd. I end up with two Chrysler clips that I guess one could sell on eBay. The dealer I recall was selling the two for $50. Maybe they came with something...

This of course isn't the repair for a show car or a car that someone wants to keep original, but there are owners with different needs/priorities.

Unfortunately, I have had to accept that no matter what my efforts are I will not win against Mother Nature in my harsh salt environment, so my vehicles are just safe, comfortable road cars.

I would still like to find some way of getting rid of the large baby warning stickers on the visors. Man those look bad. I don't have kids and always leave my visors in the down position!

I got a new set (2) from the dealer a few weeks ago ... they were priced under $10.00 each.

Dealer gave them to me ;)

They are somewhat soft -- you will need the interior color.


Edit: I'm talking about the small clip the holds the visor -- one screw

I found new OEM on E-Bay but of course my account is limited due an unjust dispute lol.

Motorcar Ltd had them in stock for most colors four months ago. Dirt cheap too! Try their web site for the phone number.

and +1: if the original lasted fourteen years, the replacement should last awhile . . .

Wow. Ten posts on visor clips! I would think the OEM stock ones, no matter how suspect, should outlast the car at this point.

I got a great deal both new OEM shipped for free @ 19.99$ the seller was awesome enough to accommodate me via phone so no E-Bay hassles.

My OEMs arrived today and I mean wow you think they could've mad such a simple task any harder lol. The screw is about an inch long that has to be threaded through the small cut-out before you can even attempt to sink it into the hole. All this cramped while looking & reaching up lol.

Edit : Well of course one of the screws falls & enters the land of no -return IE the metal anchor to the seat where the carpet meets, the anchor is cupped on the backside with a lip so it's out of reach, to go up under it with finger or magnet lol.

This era of Jaguar has pound for pound more nooks & crannies to lose things in than any car I've ever owned lol. Let's see what kind of epic saga it is going to be to track down a matching screw lol.

Mine appear to be heat transferred/iron-ons or screen printed.
