Default Tank gas sending unit replacement

Hi colleagues, the tank gauge in my early XJR from 1997 is working erratically and - after filling up the tank - varies between full and empty. I suspect a faulty sending unit. How do I remove the unit as shown in the picture?

After searching the forum I only found infos related to the later version with the unit on top of the tank. Thanks in advance, Bernd

There is a special tool for this but you can make one. I read hat the locking ring can also be removed by tapping on it (screwdriver and hammer).
