Who Can Program or Re-Write the CAN/BUS System
 

Is there any sort of program out there that can "write" or "change" things within the CAN/BUS program?

Let me give you an example of what I'm getting at...

On my Chevy engine (LT1) I can get into the program and sort of "turn off" certain items - like I can switch off the EGR solenoid and then I can pull that solenoid off the motor. It's just a little emissions module. So when I swapped the motor into my truck I just pulled it off and deleted it from the system. Now when the engine computer "looks for" that EGR which is no longer there it will not throw a code - because I've told it to not to.

Okay...so now back to the Jag. Is there a way to delete something from the CAN/BUS system? Tell the system NOT to look for something?

Because if I pull...umm...let's say the jaguar transmission (for example) then the CAN/BUS system is probably going to get pretty pissed and I can imagine it's not going to want to run the other systems correctly.

Hopefully this is making sense.

To use a probably obsolete analogy, the "source code" for the software that runs Jaguars is evidently very closely held (by Jaguar).

Yeah, but typically the hackers are smarter than the original engineers!!

Problem is that there are 1000 times more Chevy's running around, so the hackers are much more likely to be working on them instead of Jags.

Jag CAN codes are available, and one could generate a 'simulator' for any of the stock CAN components that you want to replace... but at what cost to time and effort? Too much for me to bother, that's for sure.

No doubt. My buddy and I were talking about it the other day...we were talking about how we started our original swap projects back in '01 or '02. Now it's 10 years later and we know SO MUCH MORE than we did back then. And there's SO MUCH MORE technology available for the stuff we were doing back then. In fact, in those 10 years the LT1 engines we were working on have gone from the premier swap motor to a comepletely obselete motor!!

So I suspect that in 10 years from now we'll look back at this thread and laugh about how much we struggled to do these things "way back in 2012!!" LOL


So I guess the answer is that there's no "over the counter" program out there for doing what I'm looking for?!?!? Damn!!
