x308 .. Removing 5 rear bumper support straps
 

1999 x308.
There are 5 support brackets/straps under the inner inside edge on the rear bumper. This link shows them, item number 19 on this page

The problem is i need to replace these brackets but they have a weird fastener securing them. Why a normal nut and bolt didnt suffice i dont know.
The fastener present is a smooth head small bolt with a hole in the center and 3 small slices arranged in a triangle pattern around that hole. I have nothing that fits, but then again they may not be "screwable" inserts, maybe they are pressed into the female side of the setup as that side looks even more weird.
Has anyone removed these fasteners?.. How with what tools.. are they screwed in or pressed in?

Looking at the diagram, I would say the rivets pictured are for that purpose.

Update: The reinforcement part (2 strap ends are riveted - one end to the bumper beam and the other to the lower part of the bumper cover).
But there seems to be no information in the JTIS shop repair manual on their removal/install of these 5 rear bumper straps.

We had our rear bumper cover removed and repairs a while back. I viewed these 5 straps a few minutes ago and found that 2 of them are broken on the left rear side of the rear bumper. The body shop did not replace them apparently.

The strap part number is HNC6569AA (Bumper cover support strap) shows list price of $35.45 each - 5 required. It is part 19 on diagram.
There are 2 different rivets (part 13 - Blind Rivet (part# KRA105001 ) and part 18 - Rivet (Part# JZA100043 - now part# XR87654 also called Bumper Cover Rivet - Hampton Jaguar on Ebay).

Not sure which one of these rivets are used for attaching the 5 straps to the bumper beam.

yes on my recenty purchased car, the 5 straps were all busted up. I welded them up with a soldering iron a short while ago but have purchased new straps so its time to replace them proper. Body shops, mechanics etc never do a proper job, but then again maybe we collectors of these cars just operate on a high level with higher requuirements.
Best to always do your own repairs if one can, that way you can ensure a quailty job.

Back to these rivets, to drill them out will be very difficult as the angle at whch they are placed is awkward especially for the top side one. The major problem is however the environment all around is all plastic so a slip up with the drill may lead to expensive repairs.
If anyone has removed these, please let us all know how.

Nice video with proper English (using spanner -ie wrench) quite detailed instructions with great images.
It recommends drilling the head off of the rivet to remove the rivet.
Others online how to's recommends using a drill bit that is a little bigger than the hole in the top of the rivet (just a little now) and drill through the top of the rivet.

I got the bumper back, nicely painted, and attached the chrome embellishments and bumper bar - I'm now an accomplished pop-riveter! I'd already attached the new mounting brackets on the gaskets that came with the JLR Classic fitting kit along with the guide blocks. I took a guess where the two rubber grommets in the kit should fit as they were a casualty of the previous bodges. The bumper cover slipped straight over the guide blocks and onto the mounting brackets and I was able to insert the mounting bolts and spacers from below. It was much quicker and easier to drop the tailpipes out of the way to get a socket to them than try to tighten with a spanner so I did just that.

It turned out that I didn't use the adjusters to get things nice and snug before tightening up the bolts so had to loosen them off to do that. It now all fits perfectly and isn't banging and rattling around while I drive.

Total cost with the mounting brackets, fitting kit and salvaged bumper bar was around £300 - the JLR classic spring sale 20% discount was a big help.

New brackets before generous application of coppaslip on the adjusters. You can see the aluminium is corroding a bit after a couple of days of the elements so I also put some clear coating on them.

I couldn't find anywhere esle where these grommets would fit so hoping this is right - they certainly seemed to secure the bumper cover. Also did some repainting and rust-proofing in this area before refitting the bumper

Newly applied paint is just a shade brighter than the 22 year old original even if the code matches.

That happened to me a few weeks back - I think its because they have "recommended threads" below yours, and it is easy to post in the wrong dialogue box.

If you go in your "User control panel" then find "Edit options" there is a "Thread display options" that you can scroll down to. Then you can click "disable related threads".

It worked for me.

I saw that in an earlier thread so have just gone and done it.

At least I feel 5% less silly now.... :icon_biggrin:
