XJ6 (X300) Drivers Air Bag On XJ8/XJR (X308)?
 

Does any know if the drivers side air bag on the steering wheel can be swapped from X300 XJ6 to X308 XJR? I don't NEED a new air bag...I just want the fancy growler instead of the embossed XJR on the cover.

Nope. Wont really work. My X308 has a growler airbag.

It would need comparing, if they mount on the wheel in the same place, and the pigtail connector is the same then I don't see why not. If they don't - then it's a case of drilling out the rivets on the facia of both, then re-riveting onto the 308 base.

And won't work, as the X308 airbag unit has cutouts for the buttons ;) I troed to fit a better condition X300 one to my X308. Plugs are the same but the buttons require some cutting of the airbag.

I guess just buying a vanilla s/h XJ8 airbag and fitting it would do it then?

@Daim, I don't understand you? When I rebuilt my car I needed the 'R' emblem airbag as it's unique to the 100 so I had to drill out and rivet it onto another airbag frame.

I have a replacement X300 airbag on a X300 . The growler badge was ripper out by the PO as a souvenir . So I found a X300 airbag assembly to replace it . The growler pin has 3 thin tabs on the outer perimeter that punch through the leather and bend over . No radio button cutouts . The X308 from what it sounds may be a rivet .

Just the growler may not be avail unless you buy a whole airbag assembly or may find a donor already blown . To get to the bent over tabs you would have to drill out the pop rivets that hold the bag in a container frame to get to that inside surface . Then you would have to pop rivet it back to the closed container form .

You can have my oroginal X300 airbag assembly and see if it fits as the airbag was blown and cut away

There is a salvage company in LA that seems to go through alot of X300's that may have a blown bag to salvage from . I would recommend yourself to remove the growler .

Today I took my '99 XJ x308 from the service, The broken secondary tensioner in the right bank was replaced on the new one from SNG Barratt. When the old tensioner was broken, the chain jumped to one or two teeth, I don't know exactly, but it was a luck for me that pistons didn't strike valves. And also, when the tensioner was replaced and the chain was set in accordance to the marks, the "restricted performance" error disappeared! I don't know how these operations affected it.

Finished up the rear headrests, guess I succeeded ...

The Sovereign ( and I think the VDP seats ) model version for the X300 will not be so high up as the armrest has to come off for a cavity . If I can figure out how with the whole seat back removed from the car .

I was actually quite surprised at the ease of access and disassembly. While I am at it the thermostat housing gets replaced with the aluminum upgrade, replacing the Heater IN/OUT hoses.

Left side cams (shown here) in sync just like the right side (checked flats with a straight edge), and timing chains, guides and gears look perfect. With 106k miles I was expecting different, I am suspecting they have been replaced? Any suggestions to look for "While I am there?" waiting for my other parts to arrive?

So while I am there, replacing or fixing:

• Obviously leaking Intake Manifold Gaskets with new
• full inspection and seal up all glued on parts on the Intake Manifold
• Reseal all TB flanges to Intake Manifold
• Cam cover gaskets and o-rings sets New
• VVT Solenoid gaskets New
• Fuel Injector O-Rings (set of 3 o-rings each) New
• Heater IN/Out hoses running under the intake New
• Plastic Thermostat housing setup with all Aluminum upgrade New;
• Thermostat - failsafe OE New
• Upper Radiator Hose New
• Lower Radiator Hose New
• Thermostat housing to hose housing hose New
• - already replaced
  • NGK Irridium plugs New
  • coils New
  • HO2 upstream and O2 downstream Sensors New
  • - already addressed these
    • part load hose
    • full load hose
    • Injector air flush hose
    • Throttle Body
    • MAF sensor (swapped with my 2000 XJ8 to confirm operation)
    • cleaned 8 injectors reverse and forward flush

Bore-scope check of each intake valve and valve seat.
Also a full compression check and leakdown test "while I am in there" to make sure all cylinders are uniform, valves /rings are sealing up.
Do some harness and electrical diagnostics / checking.

Fun for a weekend or two.

Glen, while you're in there I would suggest changing the timing chain tensioners, they're the plastic version that the bottom picture shows.

The uppers, lowers and guides are plastic and do fail leading to a new engine in the worst case, lots of solid info on how to tackle it.

You will need to remove the fan assembly and timing cover on the front of the engine to access the parts that need replacing.

What did I do with my JAG today??
Well, I finally come to shoot, and reassembled my fuel tank with an new BOSCH pump, all new hardware and new hoses etc inside the tank, all new stuff
And new quick connectors for the tank connectors/fuellines..
New K&N fuel filter..( and blow the old gunk out from the fuel lines, was old gasoline that smelled like turpentine and looked like old oil "goe"
The car had been parked for like 8 years?!
Got the tank back in the car, filled some fuel, and primed the lines
And to a surprise, she spun up! First time for me.. well spun and spun, kinda sputtered and so..
But at least she kinda run!
So how do I clean my injectors?
Any ideas/suggestions?

Replaced the missing headlight on Alice. Finally got word back on the insurance company repairing the rear end.
