xj8 battery warning light

Hi ive got a 98 3.2 xj8 and the battery warning light comes on intermittantly and dash display says battery not chargeing but if you have a volt meter on the batt its showing 14.28 volts even when the light is on if you drive it or sometimes even rev it the light goes out any ideas?

You may want to pull the battery and load test it. Most parts houses will do that free of charge.

it is probably your alternator. It may be showing voltage but not enough amperage. Have it tested while the light is on and a good alternator will put out 1/3 of total rating. So if you have 120 amp alternator it should show 30-40 amp load with all lights on and blower motor on and engine at 2,000 rpm's. Make sure if it is an alternator issue you have the new one tested before installing. I found this out the hard way and after changing 2 alternators to finally get a good one I learned.
