XJ8 Reversing Sensors
Evening all. I have a 2002 3.2 SE. I have owned X308's for the past 10 years so whilst I am a long was from being an expert I have "experience" having recently had quite enough of my reversing sensors which when selecting reverse would a} go off immediately. b) not go off until you had run over everything to the rear of you. c) makes sounds like the distress call from the Titanic and then fade to a distant musical farting noise. My response was to remove all the sensors and associated loom right back to the control box in the boot adjacent the battery. I replaced all the sensors with new pattern parts from SNG. I replaced all the holders. I did a continuity test on all the strands in the loom. The result was the same intermittant problems as before. I then changed the control box with another one s/h alledgedly ok. I have now run out of ideas, could anyone give me a clue what to try next. I know, I know.... you can love your Jag but it will never love you......Help!
There is probably a sensor that is malfunctioning, and it could be more than one.
You can put your ear next to each sensor and see if all 4 of them are clicking/chirping.
If all of them are, at that point you probably a backup sensing module problem. If one
of the four is NOT chirping, then it probably that one that is the root of your problem.
To get to them, you need to reach up and around the rear bumper cover. You can access
them that way. There are two that point straight out (the ones in the center) and two that
are positioned 90 degrees out (in the bumper cover outer ones). To undo the plugs, it is
similar to other plugs, just release the locking mechanism and pull on the connector gently
but firmly and it will disconnect. If you get the bumper cover off then release the tabs on
each side of the sensor and it can be pulled out. If you have agile hands, it is possible to
remove it without bumper cover removal.
