XJR Wiper Problems
Hello, I just bought a 1999 XJR and am currently troubleshooting the windshield wipers. They will come on, but will not stop with the wipers switched off - eventually they will stop, the intermittent feature will work occasionally too. I have swapped the wiper relays, no help, I checked the wiper motor park switch for continuity, it's good. Any ideas?

Haven't heard of this problem before, so just guessing....
If the wipers stay on longer than you turn them on for (but do eventually stop) I would suspect something to do with the stalk switch on the steering column sticking in the on position for a while. Also, you have a rain sensing wiper system..... are you having problems when you have the wipers in manual mode or in rain sensing (auto) mode ? (This may provide additional info for the Jag Techs who will hopefully pick up this thread soon) |
My wifes 02 XJR had the same problem. It WAS the relays. I would double check them. When a relay sticks in the on position it is one of two things, either the control power isn't removed by the switch or the contacts inside are burned and sticking.
Connect a volt meter to the control side of the relay. Start the car and turn on the wipers. What ever the voltage (should be 12v) this is your control voltage and should only be present when the wipers are turned on switch on the steering column. Now with the wipers still on move the meter to the output side, this will show power going to the wiper motor. Should also be 12v. Now shut off the wipers. Relay should open removing power to the motor. If wipers still on then check the control voltage again. If the control volage present then most likely the switch. If control voltage is 0v the the relay is sticking. |
I replaced both wiper relays, still have the same problem. I guess I'll dig a little deeper.

My 99 XJR acted like this about six months into its life - under warranty. Dealer replaced wiper motor, no problems in the ten years sinc. BTW, rain-sensing wipers were NOT a feature on these cars.

Hi Markus
I have rain sense (on '00 US Spec XJR). Was this an option ? or only became standard after a certain MY I wonder ? |
Yo, SARC - If I recall correctly, rain-sense was an option from 2000-2003 (USA year designation, and US spec cars), may have been standard on VDP those years? Definitely was not available here 1999, as I tried to get them when I ordered my XJR (January 1999). 2004 and up all have it.
Kinda odd - I wanted headlight wash, too - it was standard on Canadian cars and not available US.... ________ 1999 XJR |
@Markus --> Understood, thanks. i agree it's weird how specs differ from country to country and certain things aren't available in certain places. Maybe legislation differences or something

Replace the park switch for grins, thats normally that fault, can be others. But frequently a park switch in the motor

Brutal - Park Switch
Brutal, I see you mentioned the park switch located in the motor. Admittedly, I haven't gone out to look at my motor before asking this question. To clarify, is this switch internal where I'll need to remove motor then switch? Or located exterior. And last dumb question, can I get switch from dealer without buying entire motor? My wiper exhibits the same erratic behavior. Most of the threads mention the relays, of which I've yet to try also.
Thank you for your assistance. Ralph |
It needs a wiper motor.

Needs a motor
TOPDAWG82: Thanks for the response. I just got done looking in JTIS for guidance. I just didn't know if you could get into the switch for a look & cleaning. Motor is cheap enough on e-bay to try as a fix.
