Can't take the wheel nuts off the 220 please help!
 

Hi everyone
I know this is funny but for the life of me (well, a few of us) can't take the front wheels nut off this car! Yes, we took the spiral clip off the center nut and use a breaker bar with the socket but the nut only turned 1/4" even with a 3 foot long extension bar. Had anyone encountered the same problem?

Questions:

Which way does the front wheel nut unlock? (now I'm not even sure) Someone said the left and right are different; one is clockwise and the other is counter clockwise?

When I put the nut back on, how much torque to use?

I'm no help, sorry. Haven't had the need/opportunity/time to take the wheels off yet. I've been waylayed by other priorities and the 220 is off in a corner, lonley and forlorned.

It's all up to Brutal now ;-)

As a stab in the dark, I'd make an educated guess at normal right hand thread on the right side and left hand thread on the left side.
Which side were you trying?
A pic always helps and we want those anyway!:icon_photo:

If it is anything other than normal, it would be called out in the owner/vehicle maintenance manuals.

I think Norri is correct about the direction. The manual does not have any info on wheel nut torque or direction.

Most people who work on this car has to guess even the simplest thing as to how to take the wheels off. I felt so embarrassed when I send the e-mail to Don Law racing asking them how to do this. It had been three days and no answer form him. He probably had been laughing non stop!

Does a service manual exists for this car? I haven't had a chance to talk with Don Law yet. I swear I'm going to compile (hopefully with the help from people like Doug and Brutal) all of the service knowledge on this car and post it here so we don't have to relay on one freaking person in the whole world to answer a simple question. We've already changed the AC pump on it and now we're looking into a strange noise coming from the left front wheel and looseness in the steering wheel.
I'm thinking the wheel nuts had been over torqued last time plus the center post and the nut being aluminum doesn't help. We'll put some heat into the front rotors by driving it around and then use the impact gun and see what happen. I'll keep you guys posted and will take pictures once we get the wheels off

But the "vehicle maintenance manual" is a separate consumer grade booklet that normally ships with the car covering some simple things such as fuse replacement, jacking, wheel replacement. On other makes it is not a separate booklet, but Jaguar separates the two. On the sedans, it is stored on the wall of the trunk.

Try a rear lugnut on the same side. Just be aware the if a left hand thread is used, it will be used only on one side of the car. The other side will always be right hand thread. Front and back of a side will be the same. Check another car using left hand threads for which side it is used on.

Don Law has a full set of printed manual for about $1000 plus shipping.

Plums you're right about the consumer grade booklet. It usually contain stuff thats too simple for the mechanic and too complicated for the millionaire car owners.

80mm steel socket, a big compressor and a truck air impact wrench.

watchout for Left handed thread. on one side.

It is my drivers rear that always sticks.

Logically- the left hand thread would be on the left side of the car. To counteract forward rotational unscrewing.

Or do I need more tea input?

Please can we have some pictures of these rare and gorgeous machines.

Sorry about the very late post, but for future reference, turn right hand side (RHS) clockwise; LHS (USA drivers side) counter-clockwise, to remove.
Another easy way to remember is that the breaker bar is always pointing forwards when you stand or jump on it to remove the nuts!
I also use a 3/4 inch impact wrench directly on the wheel adaptor.
This applies to wire wheels, like E type, as well.
