Default 1990 xj40 update

I am keeping my fingers crossed. So far everything is working on the car.
Thanks to the forum members whose input helped me solve the issues.
List of things accomplished:
Complete Tune up
All fluids changed
Wheel hub bearings replaced (front and rear)
Oil cooling line o-rings replaced
Steering rack and outer tie rod ends replaced.
Oil filler pipe gasket resealed
Headliner replaced
All bulbs replaced
All fuses replaced
All relays removed, inspected and cleaned
All door locks lubricated
Door speakers replaced with 4" 2 way speakers
Awaiting the arrival of a self powered sub woofer to install in place of under rear seat speakers
New stereo head unit
Seats removed and all floor carpets cleaned
Replaced 4 tires
Front wheel alignment.
Now the XJ40 is no longer marking its territory. Nice and dry under.
Things to do:
Service AC System. Will replace the drier and expansion valve
Prepping car for paint. The clearcoat was peeling off the top areas of the car.

I am staying with the original color (MDF) due to financial constraints.

I painted the car last night. Because the temp was a little on the cool side, it took me longer than expected. 3 coats of base coat and four coats of clear. I will now have to let the paint cure, so I won't start the cut and buff procedure until Monday. Started around 10 p.m. yesterday and completed the task around 3 a.m. this morning.

forgot this. Oh well! Damn!! When I remembered it I had already masked off the car for paint. I will fix at a later date. Fortunately, I have some paint left over.

I also damaged the inner plastic of the rear bumper when I was removing it. After removing the bumper bolts, as I was pulling the bumper away from the body of the car, the bumper twisted in my hand and fell to the floor, shattering the plastic innards that hold the side pieces to the main bumper. I am in the process of trying to repair same with some aluminum, rivets and epoxy. Got one side done. Working on the other side which was smashed to bits. I am planning on using some expanding foam in the cavity behind the repaired area. Ideas anyone?

I would tend to shy away from the 'spando foam. It holds water and will cause more problems than it fixes. Not sure of your time pressure, but it might be worth it to try to replace with a good used part. Your work is admirable. I wish I had the Drive to do a whole GOOD paint job.

Mechanical stuff is my forte. I am (68)retired and my body work skills are self taught and limited to cosmetic stuff. I have no welding skills and only minor body work (dings and minor dents) A few years ago after seeing what the prices were for just a paint job, I invested in a decent air compressor and 2 good spray guns and a cheap spray gun for primer. Surprisingly I learnt a lot from a few seminars I attended on paint application and spent months practicing how to lay down paint properly.
Now, when I look for any car, I never really focus on the mechanical issues. Give me a rust free and pretty straight car and I will go for it.
Having said that, I will not do a paint job for even my best friends and they know it.

Nice work, Sanchez!

Thanks for sharing the photos. Can't wait to see it when you get it all back together.

I agree with Jerry that if you can find a good used part for your rear bumper it will save you a lot of time and effort and hopefully produce a more secure result, but if you decide to complete the repair yourself, please post photos for the benefit of others who may need to do the same repair in the future.

Thank you all for your advice. I will be visiting my favorite JY sometime next week. As of my last visit to the JY, there were 3 XJ40s from which I removed the crank sensors, ignition modules sun visors and other expensive items with the limited amount of tools I had. Will be looking at the bumpers when I go there.
