Default What is a cam cover gasket?

When they did a compklete vehicle inspection in Feb they said there is a slight engine oil leak from my cam cover gasket. Do they just replace the gasket? I am guessing it means they will have to change the oil?

Camcover gasket is the gasket right under that big alloy casting that sits atop the engine.

It has 6 holes in it for the spark plug leads to attach to the spark plugs.

There is no need to change the oil at the same time, it is not related to the oil storage facility, however it will do no harm if it is almost due.

As well as the camcover gasket there are 2 "D" seals at the rear that MUST be replaced at the same time, as they are the most common place for oil leaks.

There are also 6 seals for the spark plug tubes that need to be replaced.

Any ideas on how much it would cost to fix/replace?

No idea in the USA, but it is about an hours work, plus parts.

The camcover gasket kit for the AJ16 was $68, and took me 1 hour to replace, which included cleaning the groove, and really taking my time. The AJ6 (yours) and the AJ16 are basically the same engine, but you have 6 plug leads that simply pull out, whereas mine (AJ16) has 6 individual coils that take longer to remove/replace, so it is probably all relevant.

Is it best to replace the gasket now? There is no oil leaking onto the ground.

Steve, your car your choice. I DETEST oil leaks, and they do make a mess in the engine bay and driveway, and are just plain Un-Jaguar.

If you let it go it will NOT get any better, and that is a fact. Other things will have a hissy fit due to the ingress of oil, and then the car becomes a "dog".

Keep on top of maintenence and silly little things as quickly as humanly possible, then the car will be as reliable and cheap to keep as any other car.

Francis,

Is cam cover gasket the same with Valve Cover Gasket? mine is leaking oil on the top lower engine near the passenger left side.

Is it blowing white smoke cause when the oil drip directly into the exhaust pipe on the passenger side area of the engine.

Please confirm as i plan to have this repair next weekend and im planning to order the valve cover gasket from AutoZone here in California.

thanks much for the help.

regards.

YES it is.

You don't say whether you have the 4.0 litre or 6.0 litre. As the 4.0 litre is a single gasket...........

.............. it's probably a 6.0 litre?

Full details always help when asking questions.

Here's the Removal / Replacement procedure:

Torque for the cover screws is 10 to 12 Nm / 7 to 9 lbf ft.

Default Cam Cover Gadket

Steve/ Kcidmad

I did this job about six weeks ago. I strongly recommend you order OEM parts from a jaguar specialty shop, I say this because I too order from a big box parts store and ended up returning the components due to improper fit. I wrote a detailed post on another site about my experience, there are two parts to the write up:

JagFORUM Logon

JagFORUM Logon

Overall, it's an easy job to do, just have the right parts and be prepared for unforeseen circumstances as detailed in the links above. Keep in mind, the part numbers I list in part two are applicable to my '89 XJ40 Base model. You should check for your specific part number by using the site referenced:

http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk...-3-2-4-0-litre

The link opens to the page for the 4.0L engine, have your VIN number available to verify you are resourcing the correct part number.

Good luck, post up if you have questions
