1994 Jaguar XJ6 Power Steering Fluid Help!!

My high pressure hose is currently leaking and i’m waiting for my mechanic to find the part. The leak is small and I decided to top off the reservoir for the time being. This morning was the first time and I poured probably less than 4 oz of Prestone Power Steering fluid which was green. The fluid already inside was a red color and then I noticed the cap said Dexron II E required. Since it was a small amount will I be okay if I continue to top it off with the correct fluid? And what is the best alternative since I haven’t been able to find the Dexron II E fluid anywhere. This is my first car and I’m freaking out please help!! (The fluid looked clean. Thinking I may have to turkey baster and refill?)

Welcome to the forum but you are posting in the wrong section.
You have the designation XJ40 car, this is the X350 section (2003.5MY onward).

The DEXRON II or III has been superseded. I think DEXRON MERCON (DexMerc or D/M) is most compatible.

I would not worry too much about mixing a top up amount. I think people have put worse things in the system from time-to-time.

Thank you! I was just really worried because I called my local Autozone and they told me I would need to flush out the system to prevent contamination and that if I failed to do so parts would start going out. I also called my mechanic who told me it would be okay but there is a sort of language barrier so I was worried if he knew exactly what I was talking about.
Also when it comes to the Dexron I know there’s such thing as synthetic and not synthetic, how would I go about knowing which to choose? Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the forum kingkrule,

I've moved your thread to the XJ40 section, please post an intro in the new members section when you can.

Hi kingkrule,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

Dexron is a brand name of General Motors and all its licenses for Dexron II/III expired many years ago. As Bob mentioned, Dex/Merc is a commonly-available substitute, but be aware that many Dex/Merc formulations have a lower viscosity than original Dexron III. Some options I've found with reasonably close viscosities to Dexron III are Mobil 1 ATF (available at many auto parts stores) and Redline D4 ATF (usually has to be ordered from Redline or a vendor like Summit Racing).

You should not use Dexron VI because its viscosity is much lower than that of the original Dexron II or III.

When you replace the high pressure line, it will be easy to flush the system with new fluid so you won't have to worry about the Prestone anymore.

Cheers,

Don
