aj6 engine number analysis.

Hello all ,
i have two engines / numbers in my car , and i wonder , would anyone be able to help me work out what car/year the engines came from ?

here are the two numbers..

4.0 litre 8EPCMA103742
3.6 litre 9DPAMA186395

I think the 3.6 may be xjs ?

thanks
regards
robert.

Robert,

Apologies for misdirecting you to X300 forum yesterday. I should have looked more closely.

The following is from the information section in JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalogue) for XJ40 engine number decode:

Ah ! thank you Graham ,so i have ...

8EPCMA= daimler? / 4.0L /petrol/ 4.0 cr/ euro spec emm./spec range? i seem to remember the car it came out of was a F reg .

and

9DPAMA= jaguar / 3.6 / petrol / hcomp / euro spec emm./spec range ?

not sure what SPEC RANGE means , year of engine ? eg its says E= 1997MY ..

ok dokey , i found this .

No, nothing in engine number to denote what car it went into.

Using http://www.jaguarsport-xjr.com/html/engine.html

gets this:

Your Engine Number Decoded

The Engine Number 9EPCMA108273 breaks down as
Marque: Jaguar
Engine Type: 4.0l 4v
Fuel: Petrol
Compression Ratio: 4.0l
Emission Spec: European
Spec Range: 1987 MY
Serial Number: 108273

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so that would give me my 4 Litre with A103742 a 1987 car 4,531 cars before the one above ?

and the 3.6 Litre would also be a 1987 with its A186395. amazing coincidence they are the same year engines !?

EDIT:

ok , well that does not work ,since the 4.0 was only offered after 1990 !....... according to wiki.

pooh!

ivanhoew 09-11-2018 01:08 PM

hmmm , if E =1997 , does it go...

D=1996
C=1995
B=1993
A=1992 ?

So lets see if they made a xj40 in 3.6 and 4.0 in 92...off to wiki again ...

looks like thats a no ,the 4.0 took over in 1990 , so maybe xjs...

wiki says..
3.6 Litre used in ...

so at no point were the 3.6 and the 4.0 made at the same time , unless it was at crossover in 1989...

eg..

"The 24-valve DOHC 4.0 L (3980 cc) version replaced the 3.6 L AJ6 in 1989.".....wiki.

so , if the "A" denotes the age , and they both have an "A" , then it must be they are both 1989 year ....maybe ....

The six cylinder engine numbering certainly was chaotic. Pity you didn't use 2 x V8's as the engine number for these is the date and time off the production line!

I have read that six cylinder engines weren't built for a specific vehicle as they are now so even consecutive numbers could be in different models. It does seem logical that the "A" is the Model Year.

As Daimler is the flagship branding, it's reasonable that the 4.0 litre would appear in a Daimler before a Jaguar.

hmmm i think i will go with the 89 idea , for now Graham ,what you say makes sense to me ;)

I've just been chasing around your posts to *hopefully find more pictures of your tandem AJ6 roadster. Holy headers Batman!!
Would love to see how you coupled the cranks?
Also, what is that grille from? In the States a tractor grille is usually used on a custom build like yours. I like yours WAY better!

Thank you Paul , much appreciated :)

if you look at the video i think Bob put up in one of my posts , in my utube channel there is a link to the full build thread .

to link the cranks i built a 1.5 degree taper lock hub , that tightens onto the rear engine crank ,and a simple three legged hub on the front engine ,then used a xk8r rubber prop doughnut to connect them .

making the complete intermediate gearbox clutch flywheel assembly,so i did not cut the chassis and lose my vehicle id, was lots more work .it was only mot'd and riven on the rd for the first time on the 26th aug ..just in time for the blenheim palace car show ,where it was a big hit .

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/i...cons/icon1.gifHi Bob , I GOT THE SEALS !....thank you so much , veronica had a fun time getting through customs with her accidentally bringing her daughters passport ! but after a hour long car search she was through and i am very happy to have 48 seals to do my two engines with , i also sourced some head gaskets at 16 quid each , so i am going to take off the heads ,and skim them A LOT to bring the cr up ,and get better economy .

motorcarman 09-23-2018 05:20 PM

Glad to hear that everything worked out. I had a few head gasket sets for AJ6 and AJ16 engines from years ago that I just replaced the gaskets for the oil leak near the distributor/CMPS area and did not replace the valve seals (No major head work or valve job). I think I still have 50 or more left.
