Fuel Failure 29

Check Engine light started coming on my 1991 Sovereign.... VCM throwing out Fuel Failure 29

Most everyone is saying to start with the battery. However, the battery is brand new 2 months old. the new battery cranks out around 740 cold amps. Must it be over 800?

The only other thing is..... I had a engine technician perform a Fuel Injection Throttle Body chemical cleaning last week (which included an additive added to the gas tank, I only had less than a half tank of fuel at the time). I wonder does this have something to do with it.... a little befuddled.

You need a copy of the engine management .pdf, it gives you all the info on the fuel fail codes and a flowchart to hopefully correct it.

Page 38 refers to the FF29. Most likely scenario if your battery is good (and it sounds like it is) you have a bad connection or a dirty/corroded ground.

Ok.… One more thing:

About 3 hours before this, I spent about 30-40 minutes getting the audio settings adjusted to my liking, with the engine off and ignition switch in AUX. When I started the car it cranked up quick to apparent issues.

Could this time have drained the battery enough to cause 29 failure. If so, how can I turn the CHECK ENGINE light back off?

Disconnect the battery negative terminal for 30 secs, that will clear the code - BUT make sure you have radio code first because it will reset the radio too.

You should get the pdf I mentioned earlier, print it out and give it a good read - it is a huge resource for owners of these cars.

oh ...and Merry Xmas!

Well, I disconnected the battery ground and reconnected it... and the check engine light went away for now. I guess I drained it during the time the engine was not running while radio was on...

I will certainly print the pdf... thanks Larry.
