Installing '93 door cards on a '91

My desire to get rid of my tiny 3.5" front door speakers and jump to 6.5" speakers prompted this journey https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...7c9a0b8833.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...c2da8f0375.jpg I wanted to keep my controls and wiring so I opted to adapt the switch bezel from the '93. As you can see, I used only the most sophisticated, laser guided cutting equipment https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...c8f7ee26c5.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...9806bd4fb1.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...fcc185d31f.jpg Jag really helped me adapt the door handle brackets from the '93 to my '91 by pre-drilling the alignment holes precisely where they were needed https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...706c5075d9.jpg This is where I started. I know most people would say that everything looks good just throw in some good aftermarket speakers and call it a day.....nope not me. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...d21a81ede4.jpg After prepping and painting the tan door cards, mounting the master control switch box with a creative blend of double sided mounting tape & securing screws and reconnecting the harnesses that came with my car (much superior to the junk from the '93) I'm ready to install the upper and lower door cards https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...97cf084cdc.jpg It was a last minute decision to blacken the door pull. I like the contrast and it helps pull together the upper card and the speaker grill. I am happy to report that the larger front speaker dramatically improved the overall sound. Now I just have to do the other three doors. And yes, replace the door seals. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...c1d1fb5b20.jpg This was my solution to upgrade the rear sound elements. I used sealed marine speaker boxes and a compact, powered 8" sub. Overall, it was a significant improvement to the sound. I know the purists are up in arms with my approach but hey, sometimes a good song comes on the radio and you want to turn up the volume:) |
Nice job on the door there mate!

Looks great, Ren! Thanks for sharing the photos!

Now it may be "over the top", but I just noticed the speaker boxes on the rear deck are small enough to fit into the headrests ;) ...just putting that out there!!!!

And.... even if they pointed to the glass, it would reflect...... Looks really good . I appreciate upgrade without destruction.

Thanks. Turning the headrest into a speaker box....hmmm....next time I'm at the jy, I'll get a couple and try it out.
So much for feeling smug with myself. As I moved to the remaining three doors, the only bracket mounting holes that Jag provided me with was ONE for the larger bracket which fortunately placed the bracket in it's desired position. I was able to use the bracket itself for my drill template. However as JAG PROVEDED ME WITH ONE HOLE for the smaller bracket, I had to best guess drill a hole, test mount the pull then then drill more holes until I got the correct bracket orientation. I'm not sure why Jag did this? Was my driver door made later in the production run when Jag had engineered it for the '93 door cards and the other three were pulled from older door stock? Anyway, the last three were tricky but overall, I'm glad I did it. I like the '93 door cards over the '91s and the larger speaker is far superior to what I had even though they were Bostons. |
